Quake Live is basically Quake 3 Tournament and Arena, played for free through your browser. Just been on it and it's really smooth and fast. I'm pretty sure the community will take to it, so it should be very popular.

Anyway, thought I would post here in case anybody missed it.

at the moment the server is very very busy. Queues are lasting around an hour to play. I recommend giving it a day or two before playing this, once the rush has gone down.

It took me about 30 minutes to get the plugin, once you have that there is no wait for a game. Just leave the page open for a bit and you will have it in no time.

Just leave the window open. I was 3000 in the line and only took about 30 mins. Its really faithful to the original, very fast and smooth. Already loads of servers, and the way it matches up your skill levels seems to work well.

See you on there!

:(

I'm sure once the open beta finishes they will increase the servers to cope a bit better. Once your in it flawless in terms of lag though. Depending on your personal internet connection of course.

They are working on linux and mac at the moment.

I have really enjoyed this game and they are starting to sort the queues out now, yesterday I started in position#5 and only had to wait half a minute!
#17
Signed up, took perhaps 15 minutes from position 3000 in the queue before I was up and running.

I'm in 2893, you have to do this everytime you want to play?
#20
Cool sounds like a nice idea :-) position 5400 right now though..

Right so got to the front of the queue.. to be able to download a plugin

Installed that and then it went to a new page to download a skill ranking demo.. downloaded that and now it says over an hour left to download and install "additional download content"

You could download the entire game in less than 20 minutes, this all seems a bit too slow.

Just played the warm up with Crash though and this is quite good for a web based game. Bit of a cheat though when it needs all these huge downloads and plugins ;)

Edit: wow so.. left it downloading the whole update thing (wanted and hour or so) . Click back on it just now to find i've been logged out due to lack of activity (!) so now i'm in a queue of over 5000 to get back in.

I would hope this service is going to improve because even for free this is more trouble than it's worth!

everything seemed ok for me, not much waiting, the demo with crash was very laggy, but everthing was ok once i git into a game.

Whos up for a dual then :)
#23
still in queueu.. im in 12 waiting..

looks good for nowt!

I honestly thought this would be pretty flaky. The long waits make it almost unusable right now too, but I'm sure it'll scale in time. Once in, I had a blast. I'm not very good at these shooters online but I was matched with people with just as bad aim as me and it made it so much more fun than I've ever had in an online game. No lag, it looks good full screen and plays better than I remember it first time around.

Glad I set it up. The skill matching alone is enough to make this a must have in your browser.

nice find ! downloading now :)
#27
reading all this reminds me of half live and counter strike before steam went and messed it all up

Battlefield Heros is another similar free to play browser based shooter that is about to come out. Its still in closed beta at the moment but you can sign up for a key. IMO it will be way better than an old version of Quake which feels way dated.
