1471 on VM tells me the number then I used to type that into

http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/02082961470

got them calling me weekly for months till I registered.

This is a backup to the TPS and MPS

Done, thank you... must remember to redo this in 12 months time.

Please note your registration is for 12 months, if you wish to stay on the list simply re-register at the end of the 12 months.

it takes number info away from powerdiallers. mind you, if you don't give your info out on the 1st place they won't contact you anyway.

Silent calls are strictly illegal, Barclaycard got a big fine for this

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7637419.stm

edit: oh after re-reading the news story carphone warehouse (who own talk talk) already got fined for this

"Ofcom has previously fined Abbey National, Complete Credit Management, Space Kitchens, Bracken Bay Kitchens, Carphone Warehouse and Toucan for breaches of its rules on silent and abandoned calls. "

If you know it was talk talk and there was not even a recorded message you should report them to ofcom.

Not sure what it adds to a TPS registration, though:

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the official central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.

Whats the point? Dont you think a zillion people have reported them. Ofcom have as much punch as gordon brown in an EU summit ;-)

It's still supposed to be a tangible item even if it is free. This is more like a tip than a deal.

Anyway it's still useful information for people who don't already know this.

OFCOM may not take your individual experience seriously but they do not tolerate companies flaunting their rules. Talk Talk will not want a 50k fine and ofcom can shut them down if they don;t stop doing this. They have been in trouble before.

coll thanks for the info, we get at least 2 silent calls a week now so it is useful as they always seem to do it when were doing something, hardly anyone calls the landline so most times we ignore it now anyway but this will be nice

Thanks

Have registered a few phone numbers. So how do these people make any money ie why are they doing something for free ?

They don't use these numbers to confirm they should be targeted by cold callers do they ?

Just checking :)

I signed up the the tps twice, we used to get calls from a Asian man asking for some women with a Asian sounding name...

He did call on and off for about 4 years!!!. The couple before us had lived in the house for about 30 years!!. He has stopped calling, but he wasnt a silent call, just a very pesitant man. These types of calls can't be blocked sadly :w00t:

Oh and the coupole b4 us....... that wasnt the name of who he was even calling for.it's very odd.it's like he has fatty fingers and can't type the right number in or something :-D

silent calls aren't illegal for companies to make. they are only allowed to do a certain percentage to potential or existing customers. you won't get them from uk companies past 10pm as that is ilegal and this has only happened in the past when companies have had tech issues with their powerdiallers.

usually the silent calls are caused by a business you already have services with. always do 1471 and check the number left on a google search. this will normally leave a number to contact or when you call the number back it will confirm which service, 3rd party or otherwise has called. if it states "we do not have the callers number to return the call" this will often be unstoppable as it is often connected to international powerdiallers.

you can only block a "witheld" or shown uk number in the uk, not the ones stated above. your phone service provider is under no obligation to stop the calls for you as it is not their responsibility or authority to do so. alot of them provde free advice lines on various ways the calls can be reduced. recieving sales/cold calls is not illegal although there are legislations to stop calls at certain times and obligations that uk companies have to keep to in regards to how many are made.

to my knowledge the previous mentioned compaies that had legal action taken against them, concerned more with the breaking of the silent call percentages they were making. if you have a major issue with these calls, your phone service provider can only assist. they do not have authority. contact your local MP and ofcom for real change that will stop these calls as they are the ones who let it carry on... especially with the international ones as service providers are legally NOT ALLOWED to block international calls.

Hope that helps clarify some issues connected with this problem...

and if that still doesn't convince you then take it from me as a 999 emergency operator that we even get them dialling from an international source on there.

tps is for uk SALES calls only, it has no durastiction outside the UK and can only assist in stopping companies that are signed up with thte service themselves.

I understand that they are allowed a certain number of unattended but calls but even if they have no agents available they should at least play an announcement.
I work for a company that offer telecoms applications that run the sort of call centre that would be used by talk talk to call out to these customers. As far as I am aware talk talk are not a customer of ours but the customers we do have want software that has a Do Not Call function which is checked against this list we are all adding to here and plays announcments if an agent is not available to make a call.

small print for this is

Companies using predictive dialers for outgoing customer contact are causing a major problem in that a percentage (at least 5%) of the calls made by predictive dialers are delivered as a silent call, as there is no available agent for the call to be processed by. This often results in the called person calling the BT,NTL or Telewest Nuisance Call Bureau, as they are unaware of why these calls are being made, and are often concerned that they may be malicious.

By registering your home telephone number on this web site you will be added to a database that is used by the major telemarketing companies who use predictive dialers, therefore reducing the chance of you receiving silent calls.

Your telephone number is retained on the database for 12 months and to extend this simply register again after this period.
