Sky 1 is inviting you to one of four exclusive sneak previews of new show An Idiot Abroad (two epsiodes) on the big screen.
Screenings will take place tonight in London and Manchester with a special welcome from producers / directors of the series.

This September, Sky 1 HD will follow world-record-breaking podcast star, Karl Pilkington as he embarks on a journey of discovery to the Seven Wonders of the World for the documentary travelogue series, An Idiot Abroad.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant will be keeping a watchful eye on Pilkington from back in London, monitoring every step of his journey.

Stephen wants the experience to broaden Karl's mind and change his outlook on the world. Ricky wants Karl to hate every minute of it for his own amusement.

The pair commented: "We're absolutely thrilled that Sky 1 took this idea. It's apt that the home of The Simpsons has made room for another bald-headed buffoon. The terrifying thing is this one's real."

There preview will be the first two episodes so if you are free tonight

Karl's brilliant act is ruined by Gervais and Merchant. He's much funnier and cleverer than either of them, but they insist on hanging off his coat tails. He does the idiot thing so well that you don't need Gervais pointing out that he's an idiot. You certainly don't need to pretend that you believe everything Karl says is sincere and based in fact.

Still, it sells podcasts to those stupid enough to pay for them and continues the illusion that Gervais is somehow a 'comedian'

Yeah I listened to a few podcasts recently and was pretty surprised at how much abuse they give this guy. His only role on the show is to be abused by coming up with silly things to say. Gervais comes off as a complete **** bully who spends the entire show ripping on his supposed mate for trying to answer his obscure questions. Merchant gets involved too but you can tell he's always a bit uncomfortable.

Cheers for the tix tho!

I completely disagree its great viewing they are obvously good mates having banter (albeit at karls expense during the show). But gervais has given him a job and money during his unemployment, not to mention the money to travel the world. What a bad mate he is!

Banter would be two ways. Here they basically set up joke after joke, completely unprovoked, at his expense - and he just quietly accepts that he is being ridiculed for entertainment purposes. Anyway I'm sure they are good mates and all agree of how the show should be run, but it's just a really weird set up. They are all talented, witty comedians - slagging the guy off throughout (and it's mostly personal) the entire show just doesn't sit right with me.

Banter is supposed to be funny. Saying 'your an idiot' to someone who has crafted an hilarious idiot character isn't funny, it's undercutting a superior joke

As for 'giving him a job', Karl has made Merchant and Gervais millions of pounds for doing nothing other than sitting there making smug, cringeworthy comments and pretending to laugh

I cant stand the premise of this show. I would love to travel all around the world, but they send someone who hates it. urgh...

He might lay it on a bit thick at times, but from following Karl from XFM days I would say he certainly isn't an idiot "character". He really is like that.

You can get all the XFM shows for free from the Pilkipedia. Well worth it. Even has the episodes while Karl was producer and barely said a word.

Don't be so **** gullible. Do you really believe he believes his monkey news and trained a magpie called Maggie which went to school on his finger? You really believe Auntie Nora broke wind for 5 minutes straight? Jesus wept. This is a very successful radio producer we're talking about

I know it's an act because I listened since day 1, before all you imbeciles started fetishising it as 'real'. I also know it's an act because I'm not a **** moron!

Oooooh touchy X) don't be so sceptical (and see the "lay it on a bit thick" caveat). I do however believe his magpie tale, as my Granddad had a pet crow that did the same. Him embellishing tales doesn't make him a fictional comedy character. Either way - who cares about the veracity, what relevance does it have? Other than you and your blatant use of the word act to make out you're not a fool of some sort. Ex-successful radio producer too xxx

I explained my objection in my first post

If you want to believe it's real, or pretend to believe it's real, be my guest, but it's not real and never has been. It's called comedy and Karl Pilkington is very good at it without Gervais ruining it by insisting the boneheads who pay for it believe all Karl's crazy stories are more than a well-written and well-performed comedy act.

Fair point, unless.... he is real oO
If you want to believe it isn't, be my guest :p it's all opinion and conjecture.

Either way I think he does need them - like Noel (talent) and Liam (publicity) Gallagher. I don't think he would be as funny without them, he bounces off of their questions and probing. Out of curiosity do you not personally know anybody who resembles Karl? i.e. A complete lack of scepticism/critical thinking skills (believe anything read, distort it through lack of understanding) - I happen to so don't see him as that outlandish to be fair.

The internet: a place to debate Karl Pilkington. Bet there's a wikipedia entry on this...

"I happen to so don't see him as that outlandish to be fair."

If you need to believe that to enjoy his routine, fair enough

As someone who has been with Karl from his humble beginnings, calling him an "act" both frustrates and infuritates me. He is a 100% legit idiot and he owes Steve and Rick everything (hes a millionaire with 3 houses and works a couple of weeks a year)

I do actually know people that share his traits, though not as funny.
I don't need to believe his authenticity, I just happen to :)
