Software for children with learning difficulties

This is a great site with free downloadable software for children with learning difficulties. It would also be appropriate for very young children too.

Switch videos are animations or slideshows set to music, which can be controlled by a range of common assistive access devices. They are designed to help children understand and generalise cause and effect (the action / reaction bond), one of the foundation stones for early learning. All of the videos can be played online or downloaded for use on a PC or Macintosh computer.

Has anyone got names of software and/or webistes that would help a 6yr old with dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a very broad term for specific learning disabilities. For the best advice speak to the school who will have assessed your child's difficulties and will know which programs are the best for him as an individual. Each childs needs can be very complex.

Same thing goes for ADHD, my son has it and the school, educational psychologist and Learning support services are a mine of info for special needs learning resources tailored to your child/grandchild.

Just did a quick Googly for "free software for dyslexia" http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=free+software+for+dyslexia&meta=

I have used Priory Woods' site in the special school where I work, we find it works particularly well with PMLD students for whom it encourages movement as they press a switch or touch screen for the reward. We've also used it with some of the severely autistic students who respond well to the animations and music, it encourages them to actually look at the screen (something that can be a struggle) and work out how to get the animations to work.

Other good websites we've used are the SENswitcher at Northern Grid for Learning: http://www.northerngrid.org/ngflwebsite/sen/intro.htm, which although aimed at PMLD students has also been enjoyed by the autistic students

Some of the resources at the British Council website: http://www.britishcouncil.org/kids-stories-eric-engine.htm (link takes you to the 'Eric the Engine' story but there are more)

And a flash-based jackson pollock website, which is good for a bit of fun whilst encouraging movement and teaching cause and effect: http://www.jacksonpollock.org/
