Just announced this afternoon by Spotify - you no longer require a Premium subscription to use the Spotify app on your mobile or tablet.

Still ad supported of course. Great now that the 5 play limit is also gone too.

Note I'm not sure if the app has been updated yet (probably will need to go through Apple's approval process before the update is pushed through).

"What’s the difference between Spotify Free and Premium?
Offline mode, Spotify Connect, and high-quality streaming without ads are features only available with a Premium subscription.

With a free account, you can still listen to playlists and full albums but you will hear adverts between tracks.

What’s the difference between Spotify Free on my phone and on my tablet?

On mobile, you can listen to artists, albums, and playlists in Shuffle mode. On your tablet, you can play any song you want, any time you like. More information about Spotify Free on your phone here."

I think I'll keep my Premium membership, as it's only £4.99 with my NUS discount.

Unless I am misunderstanding the changes it now seems almost foolish to continue paying for the service. As someone who has been subscribed for a while the main reason I continued to pay £9.99 was for the app but that seems way too much considering what they're now offering for free.

Shuffle and ads aren't that annoying, certainly not annoying enough to pay a tenner a month.

EDIT: Seems that offline syncing is also a premium only feature.

Google Play is not a much better alternative. Same £9.99 and a much worse app.

google play is awesome, i just stream my own music, store upto 20,000 tracks on their sever and play them when ever you like. I don't pay a penny and play all the music i like. AD AND LIMIT FREE!!!
#91
appears to work fine on android phone .... even better on android tablet, as you can choose individual songs just like the PC version.
#92
I pay £9.99 a month for my mum spotify but I think thats worth it, the ads are annoying, and to have a song or shuffle limit would be annoying too.
#93
Great app, going to enjoy using it once it's properly free, this 48hr Premium trial isn't long enough to enjoy ha!

I guess it depends on your usage habits. Clearly for you there is no advantage to paying for a premium subscription. I would rather pay and choose what tracks to listen to than have to shuffle through other tracks. I pay £4.99 a month, perhaps if I paid £9.99 I would think differently.

its work for me as well on nexus 2013

Just downloaded it for Android and says I have 48hrs free trial

Great to be able to listen to spotify on my ipad whilst in the shower without paying a penny!

One thing I can tell you, as well as the ads, the loss of audio quality through high quality headphones is quite noticeable when compared to Premium. It seems there is a lack of bass punch at around 100hz - 300hz, a few db's have been dropped around that frequency, which gives the music a lifeless sound.

Maybe the app is using an hpf on the sound.
..

But it's free.

Why not have a 60 day trial instead.. (not sure if it works here in the Uk as I've already used up my trial a while back)

Agree, Google Play is awesome. And I've never had to pay for the app on my S3 either.

For anyone saying you've got a 48 hour trial I'm assuming you're new users? You've just got a 48 hour premium trial. Then it will revert to Free

Can you say on your description about it

Ooh, good stuff, I can downgrade my subscription. Will this apply to a US account as well which I craftily set up with much effort? What is the point now in having a premium subscription?

Aha, very useful, thanks. Think I'll stay with premium which isn't too bad at $10 with a US Paypal account...
#109
So is premium still £10 a month?
#110
Unfortunately offline is key for me with spending most of my time in the car.

That said I don't miss the annoying repetitive adverts either.
#111
I really dont see how this is a deal. It seems totally crap to me. Think Ill stick to premium thanks.

Couldn't listen to any music on your portable device, you had to pay.

Now you can listen to any music, on your portable device, for free.

How is that not a deal?
#113
Can anyone figure this out -

App is 30mb on the AppStore, in my Usage section it's up to 230mb, with 200mb as document/data. What's going on there? I need all the space on my puny 16gb iPhone I can get.
#114
No off-line mode so useless when traveling.

Annoying and repetitive adds continually. Im sorry but when Im in the grove so some great music the last thing I need is for some cheese to ruin it. Parties would equally be ruined.

Is roughly 33p a day really worth the above? I think not.

I would go Premium for Offline if MINI didn't make such a shocking iPhone USB car adapter as that part is appealing.

I have lots of playlists on spotify and just gone on app on my android lenovo k900 and can play them all in shuffle mode! excelent!
#118
Great news for Spotify users! The ads would still annoy me though and would still really need the premium service to gain offline mode etc. I use xbox music as an alternative
#119
Also, anyone with an NUS can get premium for £4.99 a month

It's not a deal. That's why it's posted in Freebies.
