Does what it say on the tin/ title. However, I'm actually interested to see if others find this speeds up your internet browsing experience. For us - family of 5 with various devices - we suffered from variable internet speeds 1.5-6 Mbps (TalkTalk). Once I installed Spybot Anti Beacon on all our PCs, we now get a steady 6.75 Mbps.

Just me? Or will it speed up your computer's connection to the internet as well. Please take before & after readings from Ookla - the best internet speed monitor http://www.speedtest.net/

I'd be very interested to hear your results - thanks.

OK I pinched some blurb from Antdav - thx - it's over a year old:

Microsoft’s new and more aggressive monitoring of Windows systems has caused considerable discussion. Whether you believe all the telemetry is a privacy concern or not, you might be interested in an easy way to block the extensive information gathering. The developers at the well-known anti-spyware company Spybot have now provided a free utility called Spybot Anti-Beacon that makes configuring many privacy settings very convenient.

The utility can be used in Windows 7, 8.x, and 10 and comes as either an installer version or a version designated as portable. The portable application actually comes as an EXE installer that places a number of files in a folder. Also the portable is labeled version 1.4 while the installed is version 1.5. I tried both and there seem to be a few added configurations in version 1.5. Normally, I go for portable apps but in this case I would choose the installer version. The download and descriptive pages for each can be reached from this link. The downloads are 1.6 MB for the portable version and 2.6 MB for the installer version. Space actually used when installed is larger at around 4-8 MB.

Virgin media with 4 people logged in http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5779516220. I think it might well be that Talk Talk who we were with before Virgin Media might be the fact that you have a lower download speed ?.

we could upgrade to faster provider but we get 100% free international calls with TT which is worth a few quid as my wife is always phoning family & work abroad - not a boost - they offered it to retain us when I was set to leave them

moving house soon so will get a faster provider

Nice. We were with Bulldog/Pipex before Talk Talk took over, the speeds dropped to 500kb and it got to the point of buffering for 35 mins to watch anything online.Complained before Bulldog got taken over and got a £5 a month package for internet and stuck with it because it was so cheap. Then virgin came along and offered a multi package and it just really opened up the full internet for the whole family, online gaming, watching bbc iplayer etc.
Trying out the Spybot program and will let you know how it goes.my AVG doesnt like it at all though lol.

That's my speed on wireless, with Virgin. All in £32 per month for line rental and broadband. I only joined last month and they put the cost of my package up by £4. Not going to complain as the broadband has been excellent, with my speeds always above 100Mb. I doubt this program will get me higher speeds as I get over the speed I pay for already.

Your observations about connection speed going up is most likely the fact that this tool will also disable sharing of update data across the LAN and internet. This setting is by default set to "ON" in all new Windows 10 installations and utilizes your upload speed to share updates with other users, it impacts connections with low upload speed the most due to the nature of how ADSL works. Very useful tool!

even with my slow-ish ADSL speed it was under a minute - sounds like your internet connection is problematic?

Why do I need anti-telemetry?
We at Safer-Networking Ltd respect Microsoft’s wish to get feedback from users to improve their operating system, but we firmly believe it is the user’s right to choose how much of their data they wish to share.
While Microsoft have included the ability to disable certain telemetry options in Windows 10, it can be quite difficult to disable all of these manually. For this reason, we have created a tool that will do this with the click of a button, and can be updated to include telemetry additions added by Microsoft in the future.

Why should I choose Spybot Anti-Beacon?

It’s sincere – Spybot Anti-Beacon is transparent and open in what is does, listing details of the changes it makes to your system for those interested.
It’s affordable – Actually, it’s free! And it’s created by a passionate, privacy-concerned team. There are a lot of anti-telemetry instructions, scripts and tools on the Internet, but we’re careful to include only the real things.
We are comprehensive – Spybot Anti-Beacon lists optional features to block on a separate page. Our team uses cutting-edge technology and have extensive experience working with malware and spyware.
It’s flexible – if you’re the family tech guy, you can simply pick up the Portable Edition and carry it on your thumb drive.
It’s user friendly – press one button and you’re done!

Windows Mail (Windows Store App) stopped working!

Windows Mail needs the OneDrive Sync system services to work. If you want to use Windows Mail anyway, you need to make sure the optional OneDrive Service immunization is not applied, and reboot if you had to undo it.

Heat added.

What those folk at SpyBot are actually saying is...

"We'll take over from Microsoft and sell whatever data we glean about you."

Doubt this would noticeably speed up my Virgin broadband, anyhoo.

Microsoft Windows 10 is so crooked, its free and force stuffed into your mouth for reasons.
Even with these to toggle stuff off, inside the OS locked behind which we can't see the source code within it probably still has this tracking stuff on and the contract you agree allows them to do what they want

If those who're so worried about privacy then they shouldn't use Facebook, Twitter or smartphones with their info/data. Yeah, it won't happen.

does it really work? Can anyone confirm this is actually stops all the tracking and it might speed up your internet a little bit?

I don't use those things. I still want the source code to be available for all of the software that I use.

Taking the approach of "we can't do anything about it, just accept it" is scary and dangerous. We CAN do something about it.

my feedback on our internet now being much more reliable & a steady 6.75 mbps was genuine

Make sure you do a backup of some kind before implementing the changes. I used this one on my laptop and it broke a lot of things including , Search functionality and Firewall settings

It doesn't matter if the source is open or not if you don't understand what its doing.

However to allay your fears, why not wipe your PC, read and understand the entire Linux source code for modules you want and then compile it yourself.

There are many programs and apps sending telemetry back, from that being bug crashes, to usage reports. Apple got into bother a few years back because they were sending location data back to Home on iPhones, and they have a lot of telemetry settings in MacOS. Firefox Crash reports reveal a lot even the URL that caused the crash.

Yes you can do something about it, don't use the programs you can't get the source code for, but while a nice thought, you will be very limited in what you can use.

The OO10 shut up deal that you copied is a bit better in that it has a no-install version.
Spybot say they also offer a portable version but when I download it, it wants to install... not very impressed

No, reinstalling doesn't work. Skype, now owned by Microsoft, requires personal data to work properly on Windows 10 at least).

so you think a completely different deal with a different program etc is a copy? yeah right, nul points for you

and your vast brain power is again demonstrated with your user error failure to use the program as intended

that being the case (and it seems to be a variant of the warning they give: Windows Mail (Windows Store App) stopped working!

Windows Mail needs the OneDrive Sync system services to work. If you want to use Windows Mail anyway, you need to make sure the optional OneDrive Service immunization is not applied, and reboot if you had to undo it.) - you could either turn it off when you want to use Skype or remove it entirely

The biggest problem with Skype is it needs to talk to a lot of IP ranges to be useable, I have a huge chunk of servers defined as skype exceptions on my firewall to allow it to work.
