First published in 1943, this is the gripping story of one man's involvement in the RAF Bomber Command's fledgling offensive between August 1940 and December 1941. Dick Rivaz was tail gunner to Leonard Cheshire, one of the most famous RAF pilots of the Second World War. This book was first spotted as free yesterday, so it will probably only be free for a while. Other editions (with different cover art) are still on sale at full price on Amazon.

Thanks for posting, my Dad was a rear gunner in WW2, he flew Lancaster's and Halifax's and saw active service in Germany, Italy, North Africa and the Middle East. He never spoke about it much but that seems to be the same for most people who lived through all that.

Sadly I only really began to discover more about this period in time after he died, there are so many things I would have liked to have asked him about. I can only imagine what it must have been like for him as a 19 year old lad and for everyone else to face the threat we were under. How life would be so different today if this country and our allies didn't pull together like it did. I don't think many people realise the many different nationalities that actually fought together. I look forward to reading this.

Thanks, Recently been reading about experiences of the pilots of a more modern aircraft, the Harrier. Really enjoyed that and hopefully this will be just as compelling.
