so is this free for ever or just like a trial style thing? :)

Completely free, not a trial.

There are of course benefits of being a subscriber, but you can see the world and reach the level cap without paying a penny.

Full details here:

finally..... played on the US version for a month and really enjoyed it up to lvl 20 BUT yuo do need to start buying packs with points which you can p[urchase or grind out.

With this, anyone buying MoM or SoA expansion packs? I see they are quite cheap on amazon etc

WIth the shire included in Free to play, you should be able to quest to 30 at least. I suppose by then you should know if it's worth buying more quest packs or not.. really depends if you enjoy the game :)

If you like MMORPG's, yes, otherwise probably not :)

Hmm, I think they've been running a test of the free-to-play in UK, but it has only properly launched as free-to-play today.

Once I got to lvl 23-4, the quests were beginning to dry up but the skirmishes and classic instances were good fun to 28 but want more quests

I'll start again on EU me thinks tonight

No it hasn't.

A test server went live just over a week ago on 25th October to stress test the download software etc, people could log in and start a new character etc but not play their existing ones.

The actual servers went live last night.

Depends on how you look at it.

No company is going to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds developing new stuff for an online game and not make any money out of it.

You used to have something like a 14 day trial. Now you can play for ever (well as long as the game continues) without paying a single penny if you so wish.

But, there are different tiers. VIP is for the people that pay monthly subscriptions (or those that took out lifetime memberships when they were available), these people get access to all quests etc plus receive 500 points a month to spend in the Lotro store. The only areas they don't get access to are the expansions such as Mines of Moria which have always been a separate purchase, you used to have to pay actual money for them, you can now use your points to buy them.

A premium player is someone who has purchased some points to spend in the store.

A free to play player is someone who hasn't used any real world cash at any point.

It is possible for a F2P player to get everything including all the expansions without spending a single penny, possible but not at all practicable (bit like comparing a vip player as someone flying from London to Scotland, a Premium player as catching a train, and a Free to play player riding a bike or walking). A free to play player (and premium) gets access to certain quests etc and can play there every day 24 hrs a day totally free of charge to their hearts content. However for them to have access to everything, they will either need to spend money or will need to do a tedious grind. Your points are allocated to your account, not your character, so you can do all available quests on one character, delete it, then do them again on another character etc to slowly accumulate enough points to get everything. Personally there's no way I would do this, but a friend in my kin is doing exactly this and already has enough points to purchase the Mines of Moria expansion (US server).

Some people are really into roleplaying and play on roleplaying servers, some of these people may well be happy spending their entire time in the shire etc, hence would never need to spend a penny or face the grind, but that's a different thing altogether.

VIP players have no limit on things like Gold, Chat, Auction House, Mail etc. premium and Free to play have limited access to these things and Premium has a 5gold cap and Free to play a 2 Gold cap (max amount you can have). Many things that VIP players get such as unlimited amount of Gold can be purchased from the store for F2P or Premium players. Again the points needed to buy from the store can be brought with real world cash, or earned in game.

Some people would see free to play in this sense as some sort of limited trial. Others (like the guy in my kin) are happily enjoying themselves grinding away, repeating quests with many different characters, never spending a penny of real world cash, they would say it's totally free to play.

Still others come on to Lord of the Rings forums complaining that Free to Play is misleading, and think that a company is going to invest in producing upcoming expansions/updates etc, paying all their staff etc and give 100% of it all away totally for free. This last group in my opinion are not living in the real world.

That's from the US one, no?

Personally I'd prefer the UK/Euro one (which DID come out when I posted this deal) - MUCH less lag.

Nope. That is the UK one. UK based server and never had any lag for me.

Just checked and both your URL's are from the american version. Noone, myself included, ever said you couldn't play on those instead. The euro model probably makes more sense in terms of pricing and latency.

Downloaded overnight whilst I was sleeping so the file size was no problem, voted hot.
