DO NOT CLICK on Go To Deal if you are logged into any Google services as that link just adds that to your profile without checking and takes you to iGoogle page which then doesn't show what you added.

Log out of all google services - mail etc and then click on the link, it takes you to Google Latitude page where you can learn more and then decide whether you want it or not,.

cheers

I like the feature to keep an eye on my daughter (not over protective or nosey reasons) and think I could use in the form of an emergency or when in need of a taxi ride home.

On the negative side I am concerned that who else could know where she is too at any other time, knowing kids if not careful they can let the world know too much info since the explosion of social networking sites etc.

Still out need more investigation on privacy issues / options.

Been using this on my phone for ages. In order to see each other in Latitude, you both have to agree - email requests sent etc.

Beyond that, even after accepting someone, you can set how much they know about where you are i.e you can share your exact location, or just share at city level, or not at all.

Note: You can set your location manually as well, so there's no guarantees about where anyone is.

Pointless then basically:-D

Not really sure how this is even a deal?

Lattitude it is very handy to share your location with your friends in certain situations. Eg.. You're driving somewhere to meet them, they don't have to call you to find out where you are, they can just check on lattitude. Or you are in the same town and want to meet up.

Tracking your kids? well, really all it does it track the phone which you would hope your child will still have on them if you need them + they are running the lattitude app + the phone is still on and working. Be under no illusion; If your child is going somewhere they shouldn't chances are they will turn it off. Isn't all a bit creepy tracking your children?

Ok it's a great little free app, but there are plenty of them on Android phones.. My Tracks for example which records your route (including stats).. Great for anyone running, cycling or hiking who wants to record routes to upload to google maps later.

This is dependant on a GPS signal and having the GPS turned on. Also you'll need to be connected to the internet.

it gives control to both users, so a pedo can not track a child , thats the logic behind behind you both have to agree. and yes when you add some one on msn email request need to verify.
same with manual location on msn you can set to show as away /offline/ busy even though u r not.

plus its a safty net to set manual location and city wide . so that you can avoid from getting rape :p

if you really want to track some one without there knowledge then put a hand set into their bag/car and follow them.

if any one using extra such as history of your own travell its not very accurate, is it ?

this does not need GPS, same as google maps doesnt need GPS to tell you where you are. it uses mobilephone towers to triangulate your position.
and yes you need to connect to the internet, but thats obvious.

Could be useful when meeting a friend say after work in a city. More gimmicky overall to show the potential of these phones.

I thought Google Maps was a great invention but I don't like this, I wouldn't want my BF to track me down nor would I want to be given the opportunity to track anyone down

Which is assisted GPS :whistling:

I think the point is that since GPS eats batteries you can leave it switched off yet still use the app via the mobile triangulation.
#23
There both just different forms of GPS

which is A-GPS, you claimed it needed GPS, as you know theres a difference.

actually the point being that you dont need a phone with a GPS receiver in to use this. which however the above poster likes to twist things, is what his original post implies.

People are over-reacting. Even at the best of times this application is only accurate within a few hundred feet. Not enough to tell which building the person is in and in tight urban areas probably not even which street. That's at the best of times. Without several 3g masts in the area this is only accurate within anything from a half kilometre to a mile.

To clarify...

Cell traingulation uses the cell base station masts to give a rough idea where you are.
GPS uses traingulation of signals from satellites to determined your location much more accurately, but can be slow to get an initial fix.
A-GPS is still GPS, but it uses your approximate location determined from cell triangulation to obtain a GPS fix more quickly. It's no more accurate than GPS (just quicker), but is better than cell trtangulation.
