Ubuntu 10.10

arduinoarduino

Today sees the release of the latest version of Ubuntu for Desktop, netbook and server.

Ubuntu will always be free. It ships loads of software to do pretty much everything most people would want (Open office (Open source MS office alternative) , Rhythmbox (open source iTunes alternative). Thousands of other free games/applications available in the Software centre.

Boots in less than 10 seconds on my laptop.

Download it, try it (runs from CD without installing on your computer, though it will be much slower than running it after an install).

Happy Hitchhiker's Guide day! (10/10/10 = 101010 = 42 in binary :)

thanks for the reply arduino, however i did the upgrade from within ubuntu 10.4 itself through the update manager. Everything seems to go ok, seems like it just boots to a blank desktop. When i try to boot into the recovery mode i get a cursor then , but nothing else.
I will try Ctrl+Alt+f2 (since Ctrl+Alt+del works , this should) but what should i do after? I'm guessing maybe it's the unity interface my laptop does not like? how would i get it to just load a normal kde or gnome desktop?

Noxie, sorry for taking so long to get back, does this device have a Nvidia/ATI card? I'll see what I can do, though you can get help via the Ubuntu Forums or on IRC.

The register forum has a post which mentions something similar.

Could you be suffering from the problem described in this forum? Post says

Turned out it was the famous Acer black screen of death - a bios corruption triggered by the drive partitioning. Fixed by ...

I’m running 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One A110 from an external USB hard drive, and have been for the past year or so when it used to be 9.10 then 10.04, and then over a month ago I did a distro upgrade to 10.10 alpha and here we are now with the release. Generally no problems with it, but admittedly it does spend the majority of its time being a digital photo frame into an old spare external TFT monitor apart from at night when a cron job shuts the monitor down.

seems my problem was the universal usb installer....i tried to build the usb bootable stick with that and it did not work. i then used a programme called unetbootin but had to change the image file to an older version as the new universal usb installe does not cover 10.10.....anyway eventually managed to get a pre-view of how it looks and feels.......first impressions not too good, would not load any drivers for wireless card and could not play simple avi files....im sure if i install it fully it maybe better but first impressions are not that good..but will keep any eye on the progress..
If you're "trying ubuntu" by booting a CD or USB it can't install drivers. Much like if you boot windows, it can't install drivers without installation.

Ah i did not know that....if i install it along side windows 7 can i remove it if i dont like it (easily that is..LOL)...Thanks

    Hey rob585,

I think you'd benefit from using Ubuntus Wubi installer which lets you install Ubuntu from within Windows. You can also use the app to uninstall Ubuntu.

Hope this is of some help.

    Cheers

Not a very realistic list. I’d have thought number one would be make a cup of tea.

You need to select which OS to boot when you power on:

How do I select whether to run Windows or Ubuntu?

With windows boot manager I think the default timeout is 3 seconds, so don't blink ;) Use the cursor keys to select which OS to boot. Let me know how you get on.

    rob585,

can you read this thread and follow the msconfig advice? Did you get any error messages while running wubi?

    Cheers

Keep in mind that site doesn't seem to be up to date for 10.10, the ubuntu forums on the ubuntu site may be worth a look too.

    Cheers
