Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin just released. Free operating system, better than Windows IMHO

As good as this might be, and whilst it might be better than windows for YOU, to say it is just 'better than windows' is stretching it....

For the VAST majority of non computer literate people out there, they would be (and are) much better off with windows. Or on Mac, osx.

Sorry, Linux still isn't suitable for prime time dumb-user desktop.

I don't mean to get in the way of the ever-important/inevitable Ubuntu-vs-everything debate but if anybody here actually wants any help with Ubuntu, you're more than free to ask on AskUbuntu.com.

No, it's not some random site I'm spamming, it's an official community support outlet where there are thousands of Ubuntu users helping other users. (Disclaimer: I am a mod there)

I agree it's not suitable for everybody. Hard to say what proportion of the population would not be able to cope with Ubuntu, but I think most could with a little effort. There's plenty of on-line help, and if you know somebody who already uses Linux you're sorted :) http://www.computeractive.co.uk seem to recommend it, and they tend to aim at the less tech savvy.

I have tried and tried with the ubuntu variants, but they not only are not easy to use they have a high failure rate on my pc equipment to boot and just work as they should. I don't know enough to start tweaking loads within linux (I have had 15 years of windows experience) to just get to a stable desktop.

Puppy linux on the other hand was much better despite being vastly cutdown it just worked.

Joli OS is the perfect "prime time dumb user desktop" in my eyes, and would work great on a tablet.

Ubuntu is great and if I wasn't such a regular user of Photoshop or Steam then I definitely wouldn't bother forking out for a Windows license.

I totally disagree with the "Linux still isn't suitable for prime time dumb-user desktop.", Some distro's may not be, but my mother, who barely knows how to pronounce Google properly ("The Goodle"), is middle aged and as "dumb" as they come!

I set Ubuntu on an old laptop for her to use, she does everything she need on there!

I have been trying to upgrade my Unbuntu to 12.04 LTS but if fails.

It successfully downloads all the files but during "Setting new software channels" it errors out saying it could not authenticate libssl0.9.8 and promptly the install ends and reverts.

Oddly Unbuntu installs like to throw at me one problem or another.

I have since managed to fix the problem. Make sure all other updates done and close all programmes.

I wonder where I've heard that before :)

With regards to the Ubuntu v everything else debate. It is a free OS that generally works well but for me is no replacement for windows particularly when it comes to being spoilt for choice and compatibility. Others may disagree but that is how it is for me.

I have installed this and really enjoy the HUD (hold alt when in applications and type a command instead of clicking a menu) it just works.
    Voted HOT.

Also, interesting to hear that one of the founders of Valve is working on a Linux client for Steam and there is a picture of Left 4 Dead 2 running on Ubuntu!

Installed successfully today, using it now in fact. It did take several hours and seemed to have stalled a couple of times. Must be heavy demand on the servers I'm guessing.

I tried Linux for the first time about 10 years ago and struggled from start to finish but now I can bung the likes of Ubunutu or even simpler Mint on every surviving machine I've owned with the only problem being a PCI wireless card on an obscure brand(Rock) 10 year old laptop.

I'm not the best person to judge as I've spent the last 6 years working part time with Solaris but I find proper Linux desktop front ends (not Unity or that crap) much easier to use than OSX.

I prefer to use Linux but always find something that either needs or would be much easier on Windows at some point.

The ideal would be having a dedicated Linux OS for Steam so you could boot your machine into a console like gaming environment but still allow for PC-like tweaking.

If people wish to trial test a Linux Operating system on their machine it would be reccomended to run a virtual machine program such as oracle. Then you can play around with it and seem how you fare while losing no functionality and its easily removable.

Windows is too slow and for ever updating, Ifind Ubuntu is quicker and much better for every day use, I only use Windows if I have to. There will be far more products based on Linux than Windows in the future as Android is based on Linux.
