VLC have just released this excellent app to stream movies from pc/mac to iPhone, iPod or iPad and its free (supported by ads)

Here's the info:

Description

Sit anywhere in your house and watch movies or TV shows on your iPhone, iPod or iPad.
✔ Streamed over wifi
✔ Directly from your computer (Mac or PC)

❛Can these guys do no wrong? Seriously, if only other app devs knew how to make apps as well as these guys, the world would be a better place. Or at least my device would be less buggy. I was just watching a Full HD copy of Avatar Extended Edition being streamed from my PC on my iPod Touch 2nd Generation and it looked and played amazingly.❜

- Free helper app gets you streaming quickly
- Browse local drives, and Windows network shares

This app has been out for the iPhone for a couple of months, I've been using it on the bus each day and it's great, mananging to catch up on all the tv stuff and films I still had to watch and would never find the time to see at home.

I think the recent release was for the iPad because it certainly wasn't out for the iPad at the start of december.

Excellent app grab it now people.

Binned-it that was the normal version of vlc this is their streaming software from what I've read they are 2 diff apps

Excellent piece if software though with the original vlc am able to view all movies sent as attachments which I was never able to before. Most movie formats work with vlc

Don't forget to download the standard version of vlc

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/vlc-media-player/id390885556?mt=8

THE BEST media player on a non-jailbroken iPhone or iPad. Due to that can view all my movies on email attachments with no issues.

That with USB Disk

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/usb-disk/id370531520?mt=8

There is an iPad version of USB Disk also

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/usb-disk-for-ipad/id385275533?mt=8

And not forgetting winmail viewer

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/winmail-file-viewer/id379500151?mt=8 - currently 59p on iTunes

Are the 3 must have apps for the iPhone or iPad. With all 3 am able to view nearly all emails with no probs/issues

Wicked App! Thanks OP for the heads up :D

I thought so too, other apps can do the same job but either cost a lot more (this is FREE) or are very complicated to setup this is SO much easier.

Please check out the other 3 apps I'd mentioned in post #9 as I do feel they are must have apps - check them out on iTunes 1st to see what they all do & then download asap, you'll never look back

I've always turned to VLC for those funny format media files that your not sure what will play em, love it.

But it terms of setup for this streamer... wow! Stick in the IP and off you go. Thats some good programming right there.

makes my decision to buy 16GB seem more worthwhile...

DON'T, get the 32gb min'm the 16gb is useless as the current big name apps are 500mb or more (FIFA is 850mb+)

I've got the 32gb and ive filled it up loads of times have had to delete apps due to lack of space

If you haven't got it yet get the 32gb or bigger if you're getting the iPod touch (ie 64gb) as you can't upgrade the apple devices!

Can I use this to stream over 3G/mobile internet?
If not it doesn't seem all that useful to just be able to stream something around my house, onto a smaller screen...:|
#16
This is not really an offer. It is an ad-supported version of the 59p app and as the description states ads have only been removed for Xmas.

even better if apple added a memory card slot....then i might buy a newer iphone

THanks for the heads up, but as others mentioned, this isnt an offer. THis is an advert support version. The full version is 59p.

This is the full version but with ads to allow it to be free. This wasn't posted in deals but in freebies as it's free - if you chk out other freebies you will see that this section is for anything which is free, sometimes they are for paid items that are now free (ie stickwars 2 was 59p now free) others they are for just free items (ie opera 11, Xbmc 10, open office etc ...)

Hope everyone's enjoying another vlc app that's the best around :)

Have always used VLC - brilliant!
#23

#24
It was not developed by VLC as stated in the OP but by Hobbyist Software.

This is still available on the app store. The app you may have been thinking of was vlc player the media player and yes you'd be right then apple have removed that.

These vlc apps are must haves on the iPhone, I'm able to view movies on the iPhone without jailbreaking it. What are apple thinking of???

The VLC apps for iPad/Phone/Pod aren't made by the VLC core team. Apple are simply enforcing their draconian rules and Ts&Cs. What more would you expect from this company?

Arduino - nothing! It's the same company that won't allow flash on a non-jailbroken iPhone or full Bluetooth like any other phone

Yes, they are the smuggest computer company on the scene now :) That said, adobe have a lot to answer for with Flash/PDF, two if the biggest security problems on the web/very popular attack vectors.

Just to clear things up:

VLC was previously on the App Store for free by the makers of VLC Player which you probably have installed on your PC. I personally found the app very useful, as it opened lots of videos that my iPhone didn't recognise.

Now the app is no longer available due to stupid legal reasons on Apple's behalf.

This 'VLC Streamer' app (which has pretty poor reviews) is ad-supported and nothing to do with the developers of VLC.
