Yep - been free for years

If only they'd enable offline routing, then this app would be viable for use in the sticks.

Also free on Windows Phone and judging from most recent comments in most cases works fine despite the fact that Google after acquiring it decided not to develop it further on WIndows Phone.

It is free but I thought I would add it on here as there is a lot of media interest in this and speculation that this could become a paid for app.

I use the app almost every day for 3 years. Love it. mainly use for live updates on traffic and speed cameras etc.

if u disable data you can still navigate and route offline. albeit you need to have cached enough whist travelling.
generally it uses v little data. i remember it using less that 1 mb on quite a long trip.

You're right. That's new. Thanks.

However, it does seem a bit daft that it requires me to turn off data before opening the app. I'll submit a ticket about this.

its a crowdsourcing system and requires people to be on-line. the offline functionality is only if ur netwrok is lost not as a feature

You don't seem to understand. The problem is that if my phone data is on, but signal is not good enough for Waze to route, then it won't do anything. However, if I switch off my phone data, it will. I haven't and wouldn't describe that as a feature; you're the one that brought that term in to the discussion. However, with a little tweaking of the logic gate, then it could be, and that is what I would like.

To put it simply, the app will currently only look within (offline) if it determines that there is no data connection BEFORE attempting to connect.

Is Google getting worried by the match of windows phone. How petty tho, can't Google and Microsoft just kids and make up.

Oh fair point , because early this year I was in Dubai and Abu Dhabi , and i was on a 50mb a day bundle (it's a joke I know) however when it used to run out it used to route me just fine without data , I naturally thought it would do the same if ur out of coverage. Can't remember too well but I guess ur right , when I was last out of signal in the UK it sort off stopped initiating routing however it would continue the route/ reroute , I just thought my iPhone 4s was acting stupid.
Again in Dubai If I was going somewhere far that I have not cached before I used to preroute on wifi before I leave ;)

The main issues I had with this app is it makes your phone seriously hot and I never come across an app that uses so much juice.

I agree but I think it's worth it. Everyone uses sat nav these days so all use the same routes. This just causes traffic jams. Waze is like traffic master posts on nearly every road so gives me routes that are free flowing where previously I wouldn't use my car as the route was at a standstill.

Waze gets my vote even though I find it crashes, forgets my login details and uses lots of data and memory. Despite these shortfalls I find it makes my journeys quicker and long drives more fun and give me the feeling I'm not driving on my own as broken down cars are reported to me in good time allowing me to move across and avoid any debris on the road.

I see it evolving into an even better app.

All true it's good but it comes at a price , and I really don't want to car charge my phone at the same time as it gets even hotter.

Couldn't agree more - you will need an in car charger if you plan to use this for a long journey as its seems to destroy battery life and like mentioned above - really heats up the phone.

The app saved me from a speeding ticket, as another user updated it to inform police were doing speed checks (usual 200 yards from a 40 zone pulling over people at 8am trying to get to work as easy prey for doing 40 too soon).

Was just going to say this.

Not worth the hassle.

I deleted mine last week, kept turning itself on!

This will eat battery if you don't shut it down after you've finished with it as it'll stay active in the background.

Also, do any other Waze users find it doesn't re-route around traffic any more? Google Maps is supposedly using the same data but will quite happily inform me of different routes. The app detects the traffic, just choses to do nothing about it.

I've used Waze for more than a year. Over the past month I've been evaluating Google Maps. Overall, I now prefer Google Maps, & find it's advice on traffic problems & rerouting to be more trustworthy than Waze.

I bought Tom Tom, which is good (but not free, of course...); it uses a lot of juice too, and I run it off a charger in the car - I reckon it's good for maybe an hour on a full charge.
#34
Its a good little app, and quite fun. Haven't used it much recently though.

As a long term user and editor for waze, it is something i recommend peopke use around towns that are heavily populatedwith users, but it does have drawbacks as some areas of the UK are very less utilization, meaning no traffic data. I typically run waze and google maps to ensure i get both data streams.

It now also asks for pictures of where you are going by default for other visitors, aka waze'sversion ofstreetview, but i disablec it otherwise others could work out which houses i visit by visiting the editor side.

This really is the best nav app if you drive a lot in busy areas like me ie central london. It's so versatile at re-routing out of traffic and using side streets etc that most other nav's don't do not this well at least. the UI is awful though!
#37
Strangely I don't get any rerouting info in south london - I can see roads have problems but it doesn't reroute. Is there a setting I need to change?

I use this for off line navigation around Europe. It works very well. And it's free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.navigator&hl=en

I hope that it helps you.

it should shut down automatically if stationary and in background for a while. although sometimes it keeps going until u r on ur way back to your car and suddenly it shouts "You have reached your destination".
