Windows 7 RTM (Release to Manufacturing) is now available at MSDN Academic Alliance.

If your academic institution is a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance you can sign in and download certain Microsoft Software for free. This now includes the full (not RC) release of Windows 7.

You need to acess the MSDN site via your academic institution to be able to log-in.

edit: (just in case it gets lost in the thread)

If your institution is not a member of the MSDN Academic Alliance you could still get access by joining the IEEE - costing US$13.50 for a half year membership.

"Membership in the IEEE is open to individuals who by education or experience give evidence of competence in an IEEE designated field. The designated fields are: Engineering, Computer sciences and information technology, Physical sciences, Biological and medical sciences, Mathematics, Technical communications, education, management, law and policy."

Hmmm, I am an OU student, anyone know if I can take part as there is no institution I can go to to "log-in" apart from the library in Milton Keynes.

The problem is, the log-in will be registered to your university id so abuse will be easy to spot. Also the terms of the license state will be broken... so it would be just the same as downloading a pirate copy off the web.

oh right k :(

Just checked my school is on the list but didn't work with my school log in. What log in username/password are they asking for?
#8
It is often course related so that only people doing computing courses have access
#9
I have just graduated! But my department aren't on the list anyway, is there any other way getting a copy? My brothers course is part of the scheme but how can he gain access?
#10
can anyone maybe give a wright proxy for it

You can search here:

http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearchIntl.aspx

Some places come up with a link 'visit sofware center' that takes you to the correct site to login. For some institutions there is no link - I don't know if this means they are not available online - they also mention it is possible to obtain physical copies of the software at some locations. I guess an email to [email protected]">[email protected] or your uni's IT dept could help.

edit:

e.g., Open University - Milton Keynes, UK

comes up with the link:

http://msdn62.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Home.aspx?campus=openuniversity_finance

I have no idea wha the logon details are -- for me (not open uni) it was just my usual logon info.
#12
Awesome, I think I can get it -- Engineering at university of birmingham

I cant seem to log in with my Uni ID though
#13
Does this have any restrictions on use - i.e. can it be used in a production environment?

Anyone done this?

I've just logged into my MSDN AA Account and the only Windows 7 that is available seems to be the RC. Any tips for finding RTM?
#16
Same here, theres a message saying the Windows 7 Professional is available but it is not on the list. Only beta and rc copies are available. I am with Aston University and just graduated this summer so not sure if it has become available but i do not have access to any new software maybe.
#17
Listed as:

Windows 7 Professional (x64) - DVD (English)

for me.

edit: RC versions are also still listed so make sure it is the one without RC in the title.

Giba, i asked earlier, and noone offered to share, even though i ama student myself problem i have is my college doesnt show up ont he MSDNAA list :(
#19
My local college is listed, so if I took an eight week evening class say in Photoshop or dreamweaver etc would I become eligible?

Also would PTA members of a school be eligible?

Sadly I graduated a year ago, so no longer any access :x

If your normal uni login details do not work, there is a way of checking who to contact. First make sure you are on the correct page for your institution AND department (search for your school/uni here, check you are a member of one of the listed departments and click the relevant link, if one exists). There is a 'Support' link at the bottom of the login page, which has details of the MSDNAA contact at your institution. Its worth checking the link above because, for example, at my uni there were seperate listings for the computer science and electronic engineering departments, so worth making sure you're trying to log in on the correct site.

In my experience, the guy responsible had already automatically registered everyone for it, so he had a load of passwords waiting for people that he just hadn't bothered to email out i.e. same uni email address login, but MSDN-specific password.

Members can only download/order each seperate product once, so unless you find someone who doesn't want it themselves, you're unlikely to get any offers.

There are two entries:

"Windows 7 Professional (x64) - DVD (English)"
and
"Windows 7 Professional (x86) - DVD (English)" - This is the 32-bit version, if you weren't sure

Make sure you get the correct one
#22
The IT departments at each Uni can switch on or off which applications can be downloaded by users under their 'control'. So don't expect all users to see the same software available. Our IT guys didn't give us the RC, cos it wasn't really worth doing, but we've got the RTM version now.
#23
I tried my OU login but it didn't work :( I've emailed the OU to ask what to do.

Call up OU and a very helpfull chap got all the info needed, the out come was the OU is in review process with MDSN membership, so as of now they are not a member, (MDSN are looking for if OU course qualify etc etc)

so you'll have to look at the IEEE route, for OU students

Thanks for reporting back. Have some rep. What course are you doing? I am doing T214: Making Sense of Complexity. Really weird course!
#26
looks like only a year membership is available for the IEEE route as it is past thier August the 16th cut off... still worth it if it works...

can any one help? i log on to the site correctly but all of the downloads are greyed out I have loads in the list though so i'm not sure if this is correct? i'm wondering if i have the correct link!
#28
Just looked, they are both available for me to download however i am no longer a student at my university so i will never get chance to download it there. I'm wonder if i can just obtain a copy of windows 7 and use the serial they have provided me with?

If it works i'll be sure to share some keys with you :pirate:
#29
Yeh it doesnt matter where you get the copy of windows from, its the key that essientially is the difference between legit and illegit. Keys are one use, but if you get any spare please mail me mate :D
#30
well i have a key for both versions (32 and 64) and im sure ill only be using one of them, so you might get lucky when i decide to upgrade from this RC version im using atm.

From what I've read on release one key will activate 32 and 64 bit versions the only difference between keys is whether its for home/enterprise/pro versions etc.
#32
yeh the key differ in the starter/home/prem/pro/enterprise/ultamite versions, the x84 and x64 dont matter, so please mail me, if you got one spare maybe i could have something to help you out also

Just signed up for IEEE membership

See these notes

The IEEE, in conjunction with Microsoft, is pleased to offer a wide selection of development software to IEEE Student members. Previously this offer was available exclusively to IEEE Computer Society Student members. We are pleased to announce that in cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE can now make this great offer available to IEEE Student members worldwide.

These are the steps:

1. Renew 2009 IEEE Student membership now online (USD $30 for students in the US and Canada and USD$25 for all other students).
2. For new students, you can join IEEE online now and click on Join IEEE as a Student member (undergraduate or graduate students are eligible).
3. To qualify, students must have a graduation date of 2009 and beyond.
4. Within approximately 8 days of your renewal and payment being processed or your new application being processed and accepted, a separate e-mail with user account and login information to access your free software will be sent to the e-mail address on your IEEE record. Please make sure you provide your e-mail address because that is the only way you will receive information about the offer.

As Windows 7 is new it is likely that they just didn't update their website... but perhaps it is worth an email to ask?

This is the link to the IEEE logon with a list of the available titles ... it seems Windows 7 is available.

Can someone please explain how I can log in to the website?

My university is listed, however how do I obtain a username and password for the site? Do I need to log in via a computer at university?

Many thanks
#37
Guys quick question - I have a PC at the moment which I want to install Windows 7 on (downloaded from the MSDN site) and will be purchasing a new PC in a few months to replace the current one. Will I be able to transfer the license?

This is for University students for a reason. Uni students pay a great deal in fees and living costs and things like this are a god-bless.

So,a s youa re living with your parents, go and ask them for some ca$h and buy it.!
