The Largest Book Give-Away Ever Attempted!

http://www.worldbooknight.org/2010/12/the-largest-book-give-away-ever-attempted/

If you would like to be a book-giver then you have to apply before 0900 UK time on Tuesday, 4 January 2011. Successful applicants will be contacted on Friday, 28 January, and you will receive your box of 48 books in the week before World Book Night, which is on Saturday, 5 March 2011.

From today, 2 December 2010, members of the public are invited to apply to be one of the 20,000 givers of 48 copies of their favourite book chosen from a carefully selected list of 25 titles. Most givers are expected to be passionate readers who will take pleasure in recommending a book they love to other readers. However, World Book Night will also encourage givers to pass the books on to others who either may be reluctant readers or who are part of communities with less access to books, bookshops and libraries. 960,000 books will be distributed by givers and a further 40,000 will be distributed by WBN to people who might not otherwise be able to participate.

20,000 passionate book lovers will give away 1,000,000 books on the inaugural World Book Night

The countdown begins. World Book Night will take place on Saturday 5 March 2011 and will be broadcast in partnership with BBC Two. This dynamic and unprecedented industry-wide initiative to celebrate adult books and reading will see one million free books given away on World Book Night by 20,000 passionate readers to other members of the public across the UK and Ireland. World Book Night will take place two days after World Book Day, the established nationwide reading campaign.

<3<3 this is a wonderful idea, I have applied in order to share (hopefully) a fantastic book with my local community. You get 48 copies if chosen to share with a group etc
#3
Have also entered, asking for "All quiet on the Western Front".

If you haven't seen the original 1930 film of the book then do so, it's brilliant.

You pick them up from your local library or shop...you have to distribute the 48 books anyway so what's the big deal picking them up? Also how can you think it's hot...but not vote it hot? Strange.

Have voted hot! Excellent initiative finally!

Am sorry but if someone is prepared to offer me 48 books to share within my community I would be very happy to travel oooh...0.2 miles to fetch them!

Still free and still excellent.

Didn't notice the 'deals' now had to state prices including petrol to the stores....

Everybook seizes our time when read and the initiative and vision of reaching so many people thorough the written word is bold and beautiful.Like some massive assault on the cognitive processes of Joe , who wants to enter into the world of creative writers and hopes one day he will.Well, maybe this major project will enable countless people to enjoy, learn and grow thorough the written and magical world of books . If I can help, please count me in.

thanks for the heads-up OP :) - it's being reported on the BBC news now.

I've applied to share 'Stuart' by Alexander Masters. A very enjoyable and thought provoking read - in case anyone wants to check it out. It was also made into a fantastic TV drama by the BBC starring Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch which is available on DVD (which I didn't know before and have just ordered)

I love the feel of a book and get excited at seeing a pile waiting to be read. I want to pass this passion on to other people, especially a younger generation, and to encourage them to read a book made of paper and not via a computer, which to me is mindless. I enjoy getting lost in a good book and forget any problems I may have.

I think you're confusing the word "book" with beer. :)

I still don't understand. Why would I want to buy 48 books, costing me £200 or much more then give them away? The website is pretty unclear
#29
I had email to say that the deadline was extended and 'givers' would be informed by the 31/01
Has anyone heard anything?
I applied for the curious incident of the dog.:)
#30
Both me and my mum were accepted as 'givers', very happy indeed as avid readers and live a bit in the sticks so can share with others unable to reach a store easily.

I got Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife and Mum got Case Studies by Kate Atkinson. Neither of us have been able to enter our preferred pick up point on the website but have been provided with the email address to contact them and pick our destination that way.

Very excited about this, Wondering up ways of handing out our books to the community. x

Where does it say you pay for them? You don't. It's a free initiative to get people reading. I get 48 books for free to give to others for free.
