This was designed to compete with the OLPC. It's a full sub-notebook.

"ASUS have created the brand new Eee PC 701 for total mobile internet computing. This half-UMPC, half-laptop hybrid has to be the best mobile internet revolutionary experience you will get.

The new Eee stands for Easy to learn work and play, Excellent Internet experience and excellent mobile computing experience. Measuring just 22.5 x 16.4 x 2.15~3.5 cm and weighing a mere 890g, the ASUS Eee 701 PC is most certainly portable.

With a Pentium Processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB Solid State Disc (SSD) Memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, the ASUS Eee 701 PC will be able to handle most tasks.

Using a Linux-variant operating system requires only 15 seconds to boot. Microsoft die-hards should note that the ASUS Eee 701 PC can run Windows XP. It'll ship with Open Office, Firefox and Skype, but you can install any number of other open-source applications.

Other interesting specs of the ASUS Eee PC include, 10/100MB Ethernet, a 0.3-megapixel video camera and four USB ports."

Not a good price

It's a shame these things have wifi rather than bluetooth, because if they could pair with your mobile for internet and use web 'n walk pro or equivalent then that would be ideal for actual "on the move" usage on a train etc.

Still possible via USB bluetooth of course, but it does spoil the neat little shape a bit. As per the OLPC reference, I guess its really aimed at kids-homework-laptop usage in a wifi-enabled house. Even then, the screen res isn't great for Word/OpenOffice type usage, but is probably just fine for MSN :-)

Theres nothing special about this deal - this is the normal price. Also as the price of this has increased since Asustek first anounced it it's quite expensive compared to other sub £300 laptops - the only benefit really is the weight and the battery life. I think these only come with a 7" screen also so the resolution wont be up to much. Its a decent enough product I just dont see how its a hot deal.

I think it's a Hot Deal in terms of value of the solution (not price alone). I rarely get excited about new product releases these days but this one is a genuine breakthrough product in terms of usability/price. As you rightly pointed out it looks expensive feature wise compared to full size sub 300 GBP laptops but the benefit is in the weight and battery life. Now see how much premium PC manufactures usually charge for those two benefits, a value 12" 1.6kg subnotebook starts at 650 GBP and the price tops at 2.5k for Sony TZ. And yet those machines don't offer users a lot more (or nothing more) than Asus Eee!

To me it's worth every penny and if not because of this post I wouldn't know they'll be out in the UK soon. Voted hot!

I totally agree with the above user.
I mean, a sub-notebook/UMPC for £200+VAT? This is a steal!

Would prefer a touchscreen instead of a keyboard (too bulky) though, so not buying for the time being. And the screen is probably not transflective like some UMPCs.

HOWEVER. This thing is only $200-$250 from the US. So yes we are ripped off again.

"2GB or 4GB Solid-State Hard Drive"

Weird they couldn't add anything bigger.

The point is that it uses solid-state instead of hard disk, so that it's rugged and has a low power consumption.

Compare it to something like a PDA and it seems quite large.

You can always add external storage via USB, so not a problem.
