I was wondering what age you can use the Young Persons Railcard until. I know it says 25, then 26+ if you are in full time education. My YP card is due to be renewed in March, although I'm not 26 until August. As I can't buy half a year am I still able to use it until the following March when it expires? The terms and conditions don't make it clear.

I make a long journey every 3-4 weeks and quite a few shorts ones between so it's quite a saving.

Hi Mr Gordon,

Yes, you can use the card until the expiry date. Even better, you can buy a new card right before your 26th birthday, and use it all the way through till almost your 27th birthday.

I did this last year, applying for a new card just before my 26th birthday. I'm not sure what the small print says, but both me and my girlfriend did it and no questions were asked.

Whether you'll save enough cash to make it worthwhile depends on how much you use trains, but for me the benefit was clear.

Cheers

John.

What discounts do you get with the railcard, my daughter is at university and some of her tutorials are at 9am with some in the afternoon, would there be any benefit cost wise getting a railcard for her?

Can you combine these with a Zones 1-5 metrocard and get a discount when you travel outside the 1-5 zones?

Mine needs renewing but I can't see anywhere on the site to enter my existing railcard number... Am I being dumb? otherwise do you know if this code will work by phone or at the ticket office?

not quite true... if you travel before 10am on weekdays there is a minimum fare (around £15 last time i checked) for the discount to apply. thus short daily commutes to university in the mornings are not covered.

the minimum fare does not apply in july and august, however.

Can you use railcards to buy weekly/monthly train tickets does anyone know? ATM I pay £16.80 for a weekly pass with arriva train wales, would I get 1/3 off that with a young persons railcard?

Not used these before so any advice appreciated, cheers!
