£219.99

735°

FOUND BY: piratematt 2 years, 1 week ago

STARTS: 12/11/2007

I've had the opportunity to have a play around with one of these; and they definitely have that 'cool' factor.

They are part designed for use in education, thanks to their portability and fairly rugged design.

To all intents and purposes it is a 'PC' but it runs Linux [it has no traditional hard-drive - but a 4GB inbuilt storage card] - but this can be expanded with standard USB external hard-drives and other memory cards

The screen is small; actually smaller than it looks because speakers surround it; but it does have a standard VGA out connector. It also has quite a neat web camera built in

Anyway, Taken from the ebuyer web site:

ASUS have created the brand new Eee PC 701 4GB for total mobile internet computing. This half-UMPC, half-laptop hybrid has to be the best mobile internet revolutionary experience you will get.

Eee stands for Easy to learn, work and play, Excellent Internet experience and Excellent mobile computing experience. Bumps and shocks are no longer issues. With a dependable 4GB solid-state disk, you get unparalleled shock-protection and reliability.

Using a Linux-variant operating system requires only 15 seconds to boot. Microsoft die-hards should note that Windows documents are compatible with the ASUS Eee PC 4GB . The Eee PC includes the documents and the e-mails software, and a suite of other productivity software to help keep you on track. It'll ship with Open Office, Firefox and Skype, but you can install any number of other open-source applications.

Other interesting specifications of the ASUS Eee PC 701 4GB include, Ethernet, camera and three USB ports. Additional storage space can be added by inserting a Secure Digital (SD) card (available for purchase separately).

The ASUS EEE PC 701 4GB, youre always connected with built-in WiFi 802.11 b/g that automatically detects and connects to the Internet at any hotspot, giving you with maximum flexability.

For media & entertainment on the EE PC you can enjoy music and videos with extensive support for a wide range of digital multimedia. You can even log on to Skype or other network, and you can connect with friends anywhere, anytime.

Measuring just 22.5 x 16.4 x 2.15~3.5 cm and weighing a mere 920g, the ASUS Eee PC 701 4GB is most certainly portable and is your ideal mobile companion.

Voted hot. Expansys have this for £239.99 + any shipping, for the black one.

This looks like a great little gadget. Wish I could afford one!

Whoops - didn't notice that.
I apologise as I normally do a thorough check!

Anyway - I believe this machine is great and has lots of potential for office and education. I've tested some web based e-learning stuff on it, and it works a treat - The processor is more than capable of running pretty complex solutions.

If it were just a tiny tiny bit cheaper - then it truly would represent a significant advantage over a cheap [£299] laptop

That's the problem I have with it. In a nutshell, for a little bit extra, you can have a full blown 14" laptop.
This has potential, and I would buy one. But i'd want to install something like Ubuntu Ultimate on it, or XP, even Vista. Not some hybrid custom version of DSL.
4gb just isn't enough. Flash storage is currently in it's infant stage. Next year, i'll deffo consider one of these.

4GB is more than enough for what it is designed for, a replacement for a laptop, for those who get tired of lugging around 15" laptops that weigh several kg. They are ideal for me for note taking, session reports, spreadsheets, presentations, all the office stuff plus showing photos and videos externally etc and the odd bit of music. Plus an external hard drive plus vga out means you get everything you need. People seem to miss the point about comparing this to a "full blown" laptop for £299. If you look at other UMPC models, which are about £1,000, this is a bargain. People always want more power and more storage when the majority hardly utilize more than 10% at any given time.

14" for me is not a laptop, 12" is about the maximum in an ideal world. Plus powerful PC's still struggle to run Vista so there is no chance of running it on this and little need to run XP as it will sap memory and performance.

Did not vote. However when this eeePC was announced and exhibited it was US$199. Now that it is US$399 in USA and in UK at £220 (US$440) it is definitely not a great bargain as it once was. The £299 full size celeron laptop is beginning to look more attractive when you consider that the windows licence is already worth £30-£50! However it is competitive against a PDA.

You pay extra for miniaturisation. Who wants to lug a 15" laptop around with them all the time?

$400 = £200, add VAT => £235.

The $199 version was even more cut down from this model. 2GB, no WiFi.

I see your point, but given the choice i'd choose to have a 1.8" HDD than a silly little 4gb of flash. It could be better (and more competitively priced) if they had chosen HDD technology. Or, just put in 2gb of RAM and run the system off of a virtual ramdrive. Whilst flash storage is the new buzz, it is a little too expensive atm. Give it 12months, and you'll get a 16gb version for the same price IMO.

That's fair enough and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. 4GB of SSD drive can be costly as I have seen 64GB SSD drives priced at ridiculous amounts. I think they added the SSD as it has no moving parts which means zero chance of the hard drive being damaged if it gets dropped or knocked hard. Plus using SSD drive means the laptop will run cooler than using HDD's and saves on weight.

Admittedly the specification and price will get better but probably not for another year or so as prices of components in the laptop have gone up sharply lately which is why it has cost more. Plus I don't really think you can fully utilize 2GB ram on this machine due to screen size and it's main purpose. Though no doubt you will get someone who will complain they can't run Crysis on Vista from it.

Well they must be doing something right as they are flying off the shelves in the USA. It does what they wanted it to do and for most people, simple everyday stuff. If you need more space use SD cards 4Gb ones are £15 and 8Gb ones £34, not that expensive. Or usb sticks. Use a bluetooth usb stick and bluetooth gps box and you have satnav too.

When you look at value, this and a 8Gb sd or and ipod touch?
