That's a good price. I bought one of these two months back and its been working a treat (running 24/7). I bought a Samsung SATA Spinpoint 500gb to complement it but that b0rked after less than 3 hours! Got EBuyer to replace it with another WD.

Interestingly the Samsung appears on paper to be faster than the WD, but unfortunately for me it was also a lot faster to crash.

Excellent price for am excellent drive. Must have 7+ in my household of them!

hard drive prices don't seem to have changed in 6 months. I paid the same amount in about June for this size..

It's all to do with average stock purchase prices.
Ignoring profit etc, here's an example
£100 spent on 10x HDD = £10 each
Now add £100 spent on 9x HDD added to the above stock = £10.53 each
Now add £100 spent on 15x HDD added to stock = £8.82 each

i love the wd-aaks range, i've got at least 7 of them myself, but for an extra tenner i'd go for the seagate 7200.11 with 32mb cache and a sustained speed of 105mbps (my wd2500aaks's do max 70mbps) and an extra two years of waranty: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130826

I agree, go with the 32mb cache one for the sake of a tenner for general use, unless you can afford raptors or solid state or raid them. The bottleneck is always the hard disk, so buy the fastest you can afford or are willing to pay.

Manufacturers work on price points and rarely stray from them - what does change is what you get at those price points!

This price point is around £65 and has been occupied in HDD terms by 200, 250, 320, 400 and now 500GB - all fairly gentle increases in capacity over the past two years.

Unfortunately the technology now forces a rather sharp increase to 750GB!

I do not expect 750GB to come in at the £65 price point any time soon.

Expect 500GB drives to stay at the £65 level give or take 10% for the next 6 months at least!

Then the manufacturers will have to swallow hard and contemplate 750GB at £75 and 1TB at £150 levels.

good point grumpyone, i forgot it's not quite continuous.. still, doesn't seem like a mega bargain to me, more like normal.

p.s. anyone looking at high capacity consider smaller drivers and raid.
