One week in... thoughts and background on the change

POSTED BY: Admin 1 year, 11 months ago

It's now been one week since the big change to HotUKDeals and a lengthy reflection on the reasons for the change as well as how the launch went is probably overdue. That I apologise for, however the last week has been really mad with many 3 hour nights as we've worked to fix bugs and take on member feedback so it's been tough to find time to sit down and think through everything.

So what I'd like to do is go through some background on the site, problems with the old one, goals for the new version, how we felt we had achieved those goals, and lastly thoughts about what we did right/wrong with the re-launch and what the future holds for HUKD.

Its a bit hit a miss for me.
thanks for the better background colour not so hard on the eyes.
still plenty of times when the site wont load or you get timed out, which I thought would have changed after the new set up.
On a personal note far too many post being removed for silly reasons, and the s****** thread what a prime example, i think the mods are being over zealous to say the least, and thats MY personal feeling and not up for debate with the masses only the owner ..
apart from that ..on the whole .. i would say a work still under construction

Also loading times are still a MAJOR issue. I think the site consumes too much bandwidth with all those dynamic listing in searches etc.. and it's making the website dead slow. I'd rather have a decent loading time than those gimmicks.
Very, very slow.

Main problem I still have is the LAST POSTED column showing days and hours since last post rather than actual time. Its a real pain trying to work out how many hours ago I last visited to see how far I need to go back. Any way around this? ...
Totally agree, it's crazy having a dynamic time when the threads change position on the list too - besides the 'Mark forum read' (which is hit and miss, especially if you stay logged in here all day ), there's just no way to apply a marker.

A few people have said the same thing(including my good self), I can't remember what the answer was....
This was Admin's response:
I can understand that it might be helpful to show how fresh the deal is if it's displayed that way in the OP but surely it's not necessary for the posts within the thread.

They aren't dynamic? The date/time on the posts in the thread are absolute.

The WayBack Machine has (albeit not 100% right) archived screenshots of HUKD dating back to August 2004 if you're interested..
I just took a look through 2006. You shouldn't have posted that!

I will use smilies to summate my feelings.

P.S. I still can't find my last posts made! Seriously, how do I do it?

The actual dates are absolute but that's not being displayed. All we see is xx mintutes/hours ago which is dynamic because it's constantly changing.

I was referring to saying you understood it in the OP but not posts. In the OP it's relative but in posts it's not.

I was referring to the way the times of posts are displayed on the thread list page/discussed tab/text only view, not within the thread itself. Yes, I can understand the reasoning behind the OP being displayed in that format (the Thread column) but not the posts within the thread (the Last Post column).
