One week in... thoughts and background on the change

POSTED BY: Admin 1 year, 11 months ago

It's now been one week since the big change to HotUKDeals and a lengthy reflection on the reasons for the change as well as how the launch went is probably overdue. That I apologise for, however the last week has been really mad with many 3 hour nights as we've worked to fix bugs and take on member feedback so it's been tough to find time to sit down and think through everything.

So what I'd like to do is go through some background on the site, problems with the old one, goals for the new version, how we felt we had achieved those goals, and lastly thoughts about what we did right/wrong with the re-launch and what the future holds for HUKD.

Thanks for the explanation Paul. Must admit I didn't understand the technical side of things but I can grasp the overall picture.

I've already said what I wanted to say on another thread so no point in repeating myself. I'd just like to add one more thing from a purely personal point of view.

The only thing now that will stop me spending time on HUKD is the constant repetitive negative posts that we are being confronted with every time we log on. It is just so depressing and it cannot be good for the site now.

I fully support anyone having the right to put their point of view across in a respectful polite and intelligent manner but what we are getting with a few notable exceptions falls far short of that,
On top of that we are being subjected to other negative posts which try to plant seeds of doubt as well as the thinly veiled attempts to promote other "similar" sites,

It's also impossible to ignore them bexause they are everywhere. I also have a gut feeling people are being put off posting deals etc. for fear of being flamed and having their deals "iced".

HUKD needs a healing process so my plea would be for everyone to give the site a respectful chance. If people are lost or confused perhaps we could have one thread for help issues in the Feedback Forum which the Mods and knowledgable members can keep an eye on.

Can we please though put a stop to the mindless "This sites rubbish, www.dealmyass is much better " posts. PLEASE !

Peace to all !

Paul,
The effects of the change on the community have been catastrophic. It has been made worse by the way you have chosen to handle it. From the day of the change it has been made clear that it is considered more important to keep new members and casual users happy than help the old members to adjust.
By allowing members to post messages calling the grass-roots members lazy, old, behind the times and other such insults you have allowed them to be driven away. When these alienated members still try to keep the community going, via the pm system, they have received permenant bans for pm spamming. Banning good members will not keep them quiet. They will just go and voice their complaints elsewhere bringing this site into disrepute. I have seen on another site, today a thread where your grass-roots members are not going to be banned for voicing their discontent. It has over 100 posts. But, more to the point it has 11,400 views. That is 11,500 people who know about how little you care about your members opinions. They are not militant people or trouble causers, they are ordinary decent people who have been mistreated. How many members do you think you can ban when there only crime is not liking the changes you have made?
I think you need to take a good long look at what is going on in your name and decide what is really important to you.
Kind regards,
CS

the site is about a million times better than it was a week ago, but only about half as good as the old site IMHO. maybe another week and we will be there?
only thing that has really peeved me off is that last friday AM when the site was at its most unusable worst, the Luke Skywalker Lightsaber offer was posted and i totally missed it for some reason.
good work on the updates and ironing out the bugs though.

I must admit that I'm getting use to the new site, not as good as the old site.. but I'm getting use to it.
If Admin put the colours back as per the old site and sort the Hot and New forums the same way as the Discussed I'll be happy.

Keep up the good work

Admin,

You can post as many essays on the justification for the changes, but its still rubbish, the website colour scheme is something out of a dazz advert, and the lamer who designed it needs to read up on website design.

The logo for the website should be changed from "deals anarchy for the masses" to "forum agony for the masses"

Christmasshopper I will say publicly I have a lot of respect for you. You have been here from the start and been through a lot with us. I have to suggest however that the series of events you have posted above are not quite accurate. There have been several members banned for spamming by pm and this is a result of reports to us of this happening. I do not think sending unsolicited messages to members promoting your site is "keeping the community going".

I have sent you a pm previously and if you would like to carry up that conversation I would very much like to have it with you there.

Why? Both the change itself and the way it has been handled is a complete joke.

The design is awful; my cat could do better and she's brain damaged. "Admin" couldn't give a **** about the members that actually generate his living (the people who buy things through quidco - and lets not forget that HUKD is the main site where quidco is promoted) and quite obviously treats HUKD members with disdain. I really think it's ironic that a site where people are disuaded (by members) from using merchants who have poor customer treats it's own customers so poorly. Remember - HUKD is NOT free - it's running costs are paid for out of your quidco membership fees.

I've also noticed this morning that there are not one, not two but THREE threads being promoted on the front page of HUKD in order to explain to people how to use the site. These include one called "How to get HUKD looking good". WTF is that about? It's just further proof that the design is a complete joke and most people are having serious problems with it. Do we need a guide on how to use MSE? Nope.... Did we need a guide on how to use HUKD before this farce? Nope... Do we need one now with the new HUKD design? Nope - we need three and the fact that "Admin" himself has put them on the front page speaks volumes.

/end soapbox
Do you need a guide to use Mse?

As for UKDS, I was popping in there for about a day before I took exception and left, never to return.
