If your calling BT to connect a new line and they mention there will be a connection charge, ask for the half price connection offer.

Normal connection charge £124.99
Half Price £62.49

As far as im aware its a 18 month contract if you take it

Please be nice as this is my first post

i thought they just connect a new line - isnt that seperate to joining their services? or do you have to do both to get the offer and/or in general?
I need a new line in my 'brand new ' house but dont want to be tied down with BT for 18 months. Could somebody please clarify-
thanks

If you live in a cable area you'd only pay £30 install cost for a brand new line. 12 month contract though

I just took the 18 month £62.49 offer. Watch out though - the terms and conditions state you must make at least 10 chargable calls through BT a month.

Means you can't sign up to Virgin Media, Tiscali, Talktalk, Orange Homemax...

I wonder who else I could choose...

Oh...

BT.

BT only "connect" a line for free if there is a stopped line existing in the premises already, if there hasnt been a BT line previously you pay the connection charge

Not entirely relevant but I thought I'd throw this in : http://thephone.coop

I've recently had a line restart through them for £5.88. I did this as I don't expect to be here (this country) for long. They offer a 3 month min contract for line restarts. (still 12 mths for new lines)

It's one of the few alternatives to dealing with BT. I've got (monthly contract) broadband (through freeola) on the line too with no problems.

I believe BT forces some people to pay for the new line installation charge even if previous tenants already have a phone line with BT before you move in. I live in a flat that previously had 2 tenants in 3 years and I do not believe none of them had the phone line installed. Also a friend also just moved in to the same building as me and he also had to pay the new connection phone charge even though he saw the telephone being used and a router used by the previous tenant when he view his flat.

Rubbish, if there is a stopped line you do not pay to start it up again, however if the line was "ceased" by the outgoing tennant you have to pay to install it again as the equipment would have been removed, u may see a socket but on the other side of it the equipment will have been removed back to the exchange.

Its not BT's fault if someone who moves out requests a cease so you shouldnt expect to get it for free

Of course if someone moves out, I don't expect them to keep their phone line active. My friend and I both had to pay the new connection charge of £124.99 when we are both (at least he is) quite certain BT had previously installed and connected phone lines for the previous tenants. What I am commenting about is BT may charge new customers £124.99 even though the line may have been activated by previous tenants. If that is the case, they should charge the reconnection phone line fee or whatever it is called and not pretend that the line had never been activated before in the flat.

Very naughty but I've also read something similar over on MSE.

Hi this is for anyone in a cable area price is for Virgin Media.

My girlfriend doesn't have a BT line but live in a cable area i have found out that £30 install and £15.50 monthly for phone line and 2mb broadband. plus book online and save £10 per service so install will be £10.

If your not in a cable area FORGET what has been said and try and wrangle a deal with BT like taking the full works of phone, broadband and BT vision it may get you a bigger discount.

Rip-off merchants. If you are not in a cabled area - you've got no choice but to pay BT their inflated installation charges. Wish this deal was around 4 months ago - would have been really handy for me.
