Alliance and Leicester Car Insurance 1 year free if they can't beat your renewal.

FOUND BY: calvin21 3 months, 2 weeks ago

I was searching for car insurance the other day and came across this.

Alliance and Leicester guarantee they can beat your insurance renewal quote or if they can't they'll give you a whole year free.

My current renewal was £740 (Third party Fire and Theft) but when i filled out their form I entered £500 (Comprehensive). They quoted me £489. I checked all the policy wording and can't find anything saying they need proof.

i guess if it comes to 'not being able to beat the renewal' they will require some sort of proof.

Their terms state:-

*’One year’s cover free’ would be for the year from your next renewal date and would only apply if we cannot beat your existing renewal quote, and excludes existing Alliance & Leicester Car Insurance customers. In addition, this offer relates to like for like cover on equivalent terms to your renewal notice only and is subject to a minimum £100 damage and theft excess and a minimum renewal premium (£194 comprehensive and £95 non-comprehensive). Subject to our insurer’s normal underwriting criteria. Excludes optional extras e.g. legal expenses and breakdown cover. This offer can be withdrawn at any time. A copy of your renewal invitation or notice from your previous insurer will be required. In the event that the above terms and conditions are met, and we are unable to beat your existing renewal quote, the free cover would be provided when you take out the policy with Equity Insurance Brokers Ltd and will be by way of a cheque to the value of the annual premium charged, payable to the policy holder. The free cover will apply to the first year’s premium only.

I was really looking at the price they quoted me as its the cheapest by a longshot so far. It Doesn't say anything about proof if they do beat your current quote.

their quote price for me was £140 more expensive then directline. Make sure you doublecheck the 'assumptions', they are prechecked to give you the lowest possible quote, howeverif any of the information is not correct your entire insurance is invalid.....

A bit naughty, and i suggest something that will come back to bite them on the bum.

According to Martin Lewis its a "CON" They have never given anyone a years free insurance. If they cant beat your quote they just say they cant insure you on that vehicle!!!! (clever advertising)

Can't get them to give me a quote online.

I keep getting a message saying to phone instead.

They won't get near my quote from CIS of £176 (+ £60 cashback from quidco), and I doubt if they'll even come close to my renewal from Halifax, but I'm 5 weeks away from renewal.

I'll maybe phone nearer the time.

Have you all missed the sentence in the T's & C's "A copy of your renewal invitation or notice from your previous insurer will be required"

It says that if you want to claim the free year. I didn't have to do that coz they managed to give me cheaper insurance by me typing £500 instead of how much i was originally quoted by my current company

petedburns - they may be occasions where they genuinely are unable to beat your renewal quote - and thats the jackpot! for example a few months ago (too bad i may not be able to participate in this deal!) esure my insurance provider came up with a renewal for me that was a couple of pounds over the best quote i could find on the net - armed with all the tools the net offers - confused.com, gocompare, moneysupermarket etc etc - so maybe , just maybe, Alliance and Licester would not have been able to beat esures offer and even if they did like say by £10 that would have been the cheapest like for like quote i could find. so if they couldn't they would then have to pay my premium! but knowing car insurers Alliance and Licester would probably say they wont insure me!!
i hope that makes sense!

Interesting I filled out the form and put the renewal quate in as £195 it came up saying there was insufficient information to provide a quote and to contact them. I then left the same information but changed the renewal quote to £210. They then gave a quote of £205.

So basically if they can beat the quote they will and if they cannot they will ask you to phone them. I think there are two chances of getting a tears free insurance, Bob Hope and No hope!

Surely they would beat your quote by £1 rather than give you a years free insurance. If you think about it, why would they say 'sorry, we can't beat that quote so have a year for free' when they could simply quote you £1 cheaper. Sure, they may still be out of pocket but not anywhere near as much if they didn't beat the quote. That's probably why they have never had to give anyone a free year. Clever idea though.

Dunno if this helps anyone, but my teenage son started driving last summer and as expected quotes were ridiculously high. I had 2 policies on 2 separate cars (mine and wife's) with full 9 years NCD on each and by removing the NCD from wifes old car and using it on policy with son as named driver I saved loads more than the slight increase in wife's premium. Quinn direct came up by far the cheapest for my son by the way.
