How to rectify bad credit history for a residential address

POSTED BY: saayinla 2 years, 1 month ago

I moved into a new flat about 2 years ago, but i recently changed my address to the new address cause i was prviously living with parents, but after the adress change, i noticed that I am been turned down for credit application. plus I remember there is a lot of court letters for unpaid bills, parking fines and traffic contraventions for the previous occupants, please how can I make all this right?

cheers

Your probably best going over to MSE for this one.
They are pretty good at this sort of help/advice.

Credit records are based on the person and not on the address any more,I suggest checking your credit file, whatever someone did at the address has no bearing on your credit score

Was about to say the same thing. According to Experian, one of the companies that hold your credit file, there is no such thing as a 'blacklisted' address or an address with bad credit. Each credit application is assessed on the individual. They will send you a copy of your credit report for £2, which might be worth getting if you haven't fallen behind with any repayments, as it shows all recent credit activity in your name.

credit scoring goes on the past six years so if you have any late payments, ccj's and suchlike spanning back 6 years this will affect the score,as will employment, salary, amount of other credit, number of recent credit applications etc

Are you on the voters' roll at the new address? Were you on the roll at your parents' address? This definitely affects credit score.
Also if you've never had credit before it can be hard to pass a credit score for a credit card or loan application as you've got no history for the credit scoring model to base a lending decision on.

Hello,
I use experian too but my 1st point is that there are 3 main credit reference agencies (2 others) and some companies use different ones, so it may be good to get your file from them to check it's accurate. See MSE (as advised above) for more details.
Secondly each credit application you make affects your rating, so a few at once can reduce your score. (wait a few months before any more applications).
And lastly at the bottom of your Experian full report you'll see CIFAS (i think) and GAIN. One of these has to do with names linked to your address or previous addresses who acted fraudulantly or are suspected. This only goes away after a length of time (3 Years ish) ask experian for how long.

I can't remember off the top of my head. There is a helpline number that you can call for Experian.

I think it may be down to how each bank or credit provider as to how they view different information on your file, some can be more picky.
There is also a bit of squeeze on some banks etc. just now so they are being extra picky about who they give credit to.
