smax4pnp.exe - advice needed.

Description - smax4pnp.exe is a process installed alongside the Analogue Devices range of audio products. This program is a non-essential process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

I read too, but AVG keeps popping up saying it is a trojan. I read on another site that there is a trojan that cloaks itself with this file. I'm going to allow AVG to heal it, restart my PC and see what happens.

Did as I indicated above. Restarted without any ill effects. The sound card appears to be working ok. I'll give it a couple of months before I delete the files from AVG's virus vault just in case.

I think it's what's known as a false positive with AVG.

AVG's trojan protection is awful which is why nobody should use it, there is a reason why they give it away free.

in your opinion maybe. never had any problems with it myself.

lol, love when people always stick in "im a " on an antivirus thread, happens everytime. Like its meant to impress or mean more.
At teh end of the day its still only an opinion,YOUR opinion.
The pcs we have here at home are fine and always have been fine and the tin pot lids especially the 6 year old tends to not be the saviest yet online.. So in MY opinion AVG is a thumbs up...

Well it's my job to maintain this sort of stuff, but if you're happy with avg then go right ahead and use it. I was just giving an opinion really.

This is indeed a false positive. the following is information sent from AVG regarding it.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, the previous virus database might have detected the
mentioned virus on some legitimate applications. We can confirm that
it was a false alarm. We have prepared a new virus update that removes
the false positive detection on this file, it will be released in
approx. hour or two (it is being tested now). Please update your AVG
and check your files again.

If you need to restore deleted files from AVG Virus Vault you can do
it this way:
- Open AVG Virus Vault (Start -> Programs -> AVG 7.5 -> AVG Virus
Vault).
- Locate the file that was incorrectly removed.
- Right click on it and choose the "Restore File(s)" option.
