Buy train tickets with Visa Electron cards

-12°

FOUND BY: Skully 1 year, 9 months ago

STARTS: 01/01/2008

I always had a problem with my Visa Electron, all these greedy rail operators would refuse to accept it- then I'd have to go to my local train station and buy it. Their messing around meant I missed the cheap train tickets for Glastonbury and I paid £40 more.

Well as of 2008 the train stations won't pre-book train tickets unless they are a large station. Not that they take Visa Electron anyway. I wasn't in the mood for paying £10 to my nearest train station so I could buy a ticket so I searched online.

I tried all the online rail operators to find a rail operator that accepted Visa Electron and I found National Express East coast does- just use the Visa form. Nice site, very reliable and fast. Unlike some rail operators online there is no credit card fee or postage fee to the UK, so it's a good deal even if you're not using Electron.

Cold - Buy a car. Trains are slow, busy and expensive.

:
Quick resolve Get a better Card,
Some people don't have a choice with their bank, or due to their age/status.

True, probably should have been put in Misc, but the tip is good, it's not misleading and is genuinely useful to those with Electron cards.

I'm at a company function in London, we've all travelled down from Leeds. Some have driven, some have taken the train. The train took 2 1/2 hours, it took one of the guys driving down 4 hours.

I agree with you on them being busy, but it all depends on when you go.

Expensive? Yes, if you're stupid enough to turn up on the day for a ticket. I was down in London last month, thanks to the NXEC site (and a tipster on HUKD) I got tickets for £5 each-way.

Another tip, avoid thetrainline.com!
The other day they wanted to charge me £1 or £2 for me to PICK UP the tickets and another £4 "insurance"!
I went to FGW and bought the same tickets with no extra costs.

Cars are more expensive than trains. Example - Leeds to Bradford on a train - £5.50 return. Ford Focus £8995.

Try getting your hand on a prepaid credit card. Anyone is guaranteed for acceptance as no credit checks are needed, and you do not have to be over 18 years to apply. They work like a normal credit card, except you have to preload them with cash before spending. They come in the form of a Visa, Mastercard or Maestro which has far greater acceptance in the UK than an Electron. www.squidoo.com/prepaid-debit-cards-uk has a range of cards available for the UK.
