EXPIRED - Useful Freebies with Nationwide Accounts

97°

FOUND BY: virus 2 months, 1 week ago

I have been reading a thread about grade A tvs with short guarantees.

Can I suggest two products from Nationwide which have some good added extra freebies.

If you have their Gold Credit card you get an addtional year's guarantee on electrical items which cost over £100 if you use the Nationwide card to pay for them. The cover includes accidental damage. No limit to the number of items which can be registered. ADDITIONALLY - and the actual reason I took out the card - is that there is NO CHARGE for using the card abroad - many banks charge 2.5% on each transaction. ADDITIONALLY - any holiday booked with the card qulaifies for free holiday insurance.

If you open a Flexaccount (current account), the debit card on this account makes no charges for using it in foreign hole in the wall machines. I shall put loads of dosh in the account just before going abroad to save taking cash with me. Many banks charge a transaction fee PLUS a minimum amount every time you take money out abroad - could amount to 4% each time. This has NO CHARGE at all.

I heard from people saying the exchange rate is ****.... but having not used it before, can't really comment on it... do you get good exchange rate? I believe they state the currency exchange is based on the rate at the time the purchase is made but still it doesn't tell you how good is the exchange rate.

Had my Flexaccount for over 10 years & often go abroad for work. I rarely change money before hand as I know I get free cash withdrawals abroad (although the foreign bank might sometimes charge) and the exchange rate is usually pretty close to the wholesale bank rate, which is better than the tourist rate you would normally receive.

A flexaccount is pretty much the best and fairest when withdrawing money abroad!!

When I went to NYC last year I used my Flexaccount debit card and got a wonderful rate of 1.96 to the pound compared to the standard rate of about 1.86 at the time which was wonderful - plus you have the added bonus of not being charged and safety of not carrying around cash. Same thing happened when I went to Stuttgart in Germany last year - I got a better euro rate. I can't fault Nationwide for their products. Have been with them for over 20 years and have no qualms. They are the only bank that offers free use of their debit card abroad and the rate is wonderful.

I always use my Nationwide card abroad. I can't remember the last time I needed to exchange money or use travellers cheques. The rate is the best around - if i recall correctly the exhange rate they use is set by Visa. It also means you do not need to carry loads of cash around. I recently went to a destination notorious for pick-pockets so I simply would withdraw a little money each morning to keep me going for the day, say £50, and keep my card in the hotel safe. That way were I to become a victim all is not lost!

Simply can not fault them.

Is there a way to find out what the exchange rate is before you use the card?

http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consume...r_ex_rates.jsp should give you a pretty accurate guide.
