Aiptek Z8300HD High Def Camcorder - £179.89 @ Currys

£179.89

FOUND BY: robjw_2001 1 year, 8 months ago

I bought this last week and thought it was a good deal. It must be the cheapest high definition camcorder out there? It records on to SD cards and you get 2 hours on a 4GB card. It also takes 5MP stills. The sound quality could be better and it's obviously a fairly cheap brand etc but the video quality is very good.

There are some samples around on the web, it's called the GO-HD in the US so it's worth typing that in to google.

Format - SD CARD
Zoom - 3x optical
Connectivity - USB, Component
LCD - 2.4 inch's
Widescreen recording - Yes
720p High definition
2x Li-ion batteries
Light for recording in the dark
Remote control

It comes with standard and component video cables so you can view in HD on your TV! Otherwise it's just a case of dragging and dropping the files on to your PC. It uses the h.264 codec and there was nothing to install on my Mac.

This looks good - what is the file format of the video? And does it support HDSD cards? Finally, can you film in lower resolution i.e. in SD?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
The video uses the h.264 codec and the files are stored as .mov.

Don't get me wrong there are some things wrong with it. One of them being that you sometimes hear the lens focusing or zooming. I'd read some reviews first but basically it's good for the price and the picture quality is very good.

It does work with SDHC cards, I've got a 4GB one in right now. If anyone knows of somewhere up load the files to, I would post some samples!

Sorry forgot to say. Yes you can lower the quality. It does 1280x720, 720x480 and 352x240.

Here's a quick sample I took earlier today (I'm 9 hours ahead of the UK at the moment!)

Sorry - me again! Can you tell that I am really keen??

Anyway, Google suggests that this can be bought for £130, £160, or £187

HD at these bit rates will be worse than a SD camcorder at the same price. This is way too much money for a toy town camcorder. Cold.

Looks good! Erm.. whats the difference between this and the OP's deal? I can't seem to notice much difference. Also, although it doesn't make any diffence to me, it may be worth noting that the only way to connect these camcorders is via component, and not HDMI

QVC (TV) were selling a similar one today around 8:30am for I think £110 or £120 + postage.
Came with a 2gb SD card.

In fact on TV now... if you want an indicative demo.

Tried playing that video clip in 5 different programs, nero played it in black and white, realplayer crashed after playing it DivX was running it at 15fps or something and iTunes well it just looked rubbish. It doesn't like wobble or fast motion, have to wait a while for the latest advances in miniDV coming over to the cheaper HD cameras like anti wobble. I'll stick to my Sony megapixel miniDV for now.
