Save £150 by not buying an HD DIGITAL BOX for Freesat TV.

POSTED BY: squirrelteam 5 months, 2 weeks ago

Freesat TV is set to be getting started around the middle of May 2008 it will have around 200 channels at its launch date including five HD channels all for a one off fee of around £150 this figure includes an internal HDD of about 160GB for recording HD/SD programs.

Freesat TV will be made available through JOHN LEWIS STORES & THE DIXON GROUP in the first six months then rolled out to other retailers later.
The trouble is there will be a huge demand for the required HD Digital Boxes and there will be a strong temptation to buy any HD Satellite Receivers that are currently available right now!

Freesat TV Information is very thin on the ground right now and the dedicated forums are giving out miss-information on the subject most of these has been very friendly towards a rival satellite UK company in the past.

When I first posted on this great forum by background was 100% satellite and the reason for this long-winded post is as follows,

Freesat TV will only be shown on either Freesat TV Branded HD digital boxes or by way of SKY TV. This means that current Sky users won't be able cancel their subs and retune their now paid-for digi boxes in the hope of picking up the Freesat TV EPG although users wont have to change cables or their current satellite dishes as these will work just fine with Freesat TV.

The BBC has developed new software that makes its data stream invisible to non-Freesat boxes hence the reason to stay away from current WORKING free to air HD digital boxes and when Freesat switches on its EPG these non-Freesat boxes might stop picking up any channels that has joined the Freesat network.

Please wait until the Freesat luanch date and only buy official Freesat hd digital boxes if you are intent on buying any of the current HD satellite receivers make sure you ask the dealer to state on your invoice of purchase that the said box is fully Freesat EPG 100% COMPATIBLE?
When I first saw this information I did not believe it but I checked out this information with one of Sky TV's top technical manager and he confirmed that all the above information is 100% correct!

So there you have it guys looks like the best way to save your money is to wait until official Freesat HD digital boxes are released through official sources.

Hmmm interesting since we're all TV licenses owners for the 'privilege' of BBC viewing, can't see that to be true.

Hi m8, yes they are, they have done it apparently to protect the commercial interests of any rival satellite companies without the need to name, names

The main reason I posted this thread was to alert others that software that was developed by the bbc so much so on the blog above they have reported the next Panasonic Plasma TVs generation will have Freesat TV built-in so its hooked up to sat dish instead.

Regards,
ST.

It would appear that it is, from both the ITV website and BBC website both supporting this service.

How do those point to a "Finalised Service" ?
No technical details have been released at all, so way too ahead, the only solid info in fact is that it is on its way
In fact this thread is a news item not "A Deal" or maybe we should post a thread Save yourself £50,000 dont buy that mercedes

Hi guys,

It is a done deal there is lots of information out there its just a case of looking for it, there will be 3 Manufactures HD Digital Box at the start of FREESAT TV these are PANASONIC, HUMAX and SAGEM.
FREESAT TV is already handing out contracts to electronic companies to supply other FREESAT Branded goods like TVs, PVR, Recorders and other items.

The reason the thread has been put up here is the fact that many people don't yet know that the BBC has a special Department called the BBC Research and Innovations, this Department has designed software for the 200+ Freesat Channels so other non-FREESAT HD Digital Boxes will see the BBC/ITV EPG (Electronic Guide) this means it will be invisible to all other Non-FREESAT Satellite Receivers.

To prove this point the BBC / ITV is using a Transponder on ASTRA 2 to test FREESAT TV, I also have a special Satellite Receiver that should be able to pick it up but it can't also no other Satellite website has reported to date of any test signal this means that they really have the software to make their signals invisible to non FREESAT TV Boxes.

So if you go down to the woods today and spend £150 on a non FREESAT Compatible HDTV BOX then in 2 months time you really will be in for a surprise!

Kind Regards,
ST.

A rather scare-mongering post. with a lot of misinformation

The only difference with the new BBC freesat operation is its EPG - yes an almost essential item for PVR use. BUT all generic FTA receivers will be able to view all channels in the same way as they can at present (obviously HD channels will need an HD receiver). Even all the interactive screens are readily available by setting up channels for each one. It is also highly likely that Linux based receivers will have software written for them to allow access to the freesat EPG (software is already available on the PC which is reading the EPG data streams they are test broadcasting at present) as they are now capable of doing with Sky's EPG.

Also I think your price and manufacturer details are incorrect - I believe Sagem dropped out of the production of STBs some months ago and £150 is a highly optomistic price for an HD PVR box that is non subsidised and with software having to be specially written for the box to ensure EPG compatability. Take a look at prices of generic FTA HD PVRs - you won't find a retail price anywhere in Europe of less than £250.

So basically if you want a HD PVR then yes wait for freesats HD PVR but if you only want a HD receiver (which I believe is not yet in the proposed freesat STB range) then a generic FTA HD receiver will do the job.

Hmm. Dont think there is any mis information is there?

In having an "invisible" EPG, it makes it extremely unfriendly to use. Whilst the impression may have looked like he meant the chanels cannot be received, I didnt read it that way to be fair.

I have been looking for several months now to upgrade my setup to HD, so I think I will hang it out a while longer and see if the offerings from the likes of Technosat, will be "Freesat" friendly - or at least be able to be hacked to become so.

I will believe all of what the OP has said .. when he/she can substantiate the given " facts ".

Until then, like everyone else, I will not believe anything that I read on any forum about Freesat.

....especially when the info has come second hand from a Sky Employee..

I've seen mention of the £150 price a few times, and am hoping it to be genuine. Granted it would be subsidised, unless the PVR was low specced, IE one tuner and small hard disk.
