Info Required: Railway Compensation?

POSTED BY: Sweetchuck 1 year, 11 months ago

Hello all. I'm really hoping that you can help out here, as Mrs 'Chuck and I are currently fuming at the disgrace which is the UK's railway system.

Mrs 'Chuck was due to take a flight to Glasgow from Cardiff for a conference today. As she has been in Bath for the weekend, she had arranged her journey to give herself plenty of time for railway connections etc. However, despite arranging to catch the earliest train today from Bath to Bridgend, a ONE HOUR delay meant that her susbequent connection from Bridgen to Rhoose was missed by one minute. As such, she has now missed her check-in time for her flight and has been forced to shell out £150 for a replacement.

We're both absolutely livid that no delays were announced when she booked her tickets yesterday (despite asking) and that the incompetence of First Great Western has cost her not only £150+ but also half of today's conference proceedings.

Does anybody know where we stand in terms of claiming back some or all of this money from this train-wreck (excuse the pun) of a travel company? My guess is that we'll get nowhere, but neither of us is prepared to let this lie.

First Great Western's 'charter' is here:

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/Content.aspx?id=442

Seems that you should be able to get some form of compensation if the train was over an hour late.

Customer services info is here:

I believe it will depend on WHY the delays happened and weather it was in there control or otherwise

Errrm.... they may not have known that there would be delays today - most people aren't mind readers

Ok here its at their discretion I think though that you can get a taxi to your destination if train is 1hr delayed or more.
But last yr the train was delayed and I needed to be at Ashford International for Eurostar,so the suprvisor said wait round the front discreetly telling your partner to take your luggage round there as we'll book and pay for a taxi for you,he said to be discreet cos about it cos everyone else be wanting too who were waiting.

I think you should contact their customer services and see if they pay the excess costs you had to get on another flight.

We allowed as much time as possible, given that she caught the very first train of the day. Do you suggest we should have chartered a private train from First Great Western?

Thank you for some genuinely helpful information! Much appreciated.

It was routine track maintenance, apparently. It shouldn't take a mind-reader to know when and where this is due to be carried out.

Again, many thanks for the helpful contribution! I'll see how we get on with FGW.
