Apologies if this touches anybody's nerve, just want an objective reply: Is this better than the Nikon D40?
There are arguments both for Nikon and those against (ala Xbox 360 v PS3).
But, you can't really compare the 400d with the D40 as the 400d is more on a par with the D40x (i.e. both 10mp).
I was looking at getting a D40, and believe me, I've read every review under the sun! I was just about to order one, until most retailers whacked £30-£40 on their price
Now this bargain has come along and I'm seriously tempted....
I would say, go to somewhere like Jessops, have a feel of the camera and go for what suits you. I've been in again today and I like both cameras, both feel good to hold, but it's down to personal preference.
The guy I spoke to said that the D40 is more for the person stepping up from point and shoot camera to a DSLR, whereas the 400d is for someone who's looking at getting more into photography. The D40 is basic in regards to the features available immediately to the user (e.g. 1 button settings as available on the Canon) whereas the Canon has loads of menu buttons on the rear of the camera which are very handy.
Some say the kit lens on the Canon is poor in comparison to the D40, but this is debatable, plus most will upgrade their lens within the first year, so this doesn't matter.
Happy shopping
I finally think the 400d is the one for me
.... or do I?
