Nikon D60 SLR Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens - £382.98

£382.98

30°

FOUND BY: carleast 1 year, 8 months ago

Amazon have this new camera for £422.98 right now. Nikon are doing £40 cashback on it to. So even though this doesn't match the features of the new Canon 450D it blows it away on price. Considering you get such a good lens that costs £180 brand new you've got a bargain.

Nikon DX format CCD 10.2 MP
3-area AF system
3D Colour Matrix Metering II system
2.5 inch screen
3.0 fps continuous shooting
Near instant power-up (0.18 sec.)
Compact, lightweight body
User-friendly design
In-camera image editing functions

Can someone please pm me on how to add pictures.

The 450D will be a far superior camera, and the new 18-55 IS kit lens will also blow away the offering found with the D60.

Yeah, it will initially be an extra £140, but I think the extra spec and features easily justifies this. The price will also come down quite quickly.

That's a bit of a sweeping statement isn't it?For a camera you haven't even seen, never mind reviewed or tested? The VR range of lenses is proven to be phenomenal, and the Nikon cameras have traditionally been the equal of the Canons - so at £383, this is a pretty hot piece of kit - if you want a proper DSLR.

and 450D

Must admit I do like Nikon's even though I own a Canon.

The D60 is largely accepted as only a minor upgrade to the D40x, including DPreview. However, the 450D released spec is seen as a huge upgrade to the 400D it runs alongside. Comparing the two spec-wise:

Resolution - Advantage 450D
450D - 12MP
D60 - 10MP
LCD Screen - Advantage 450D
450D - 3”; 230,000 pixels
D60 - 2.5”; 230,000 pixels
Bit-range - Advantage 450D
450D - 14-bit (higher dynamic range possible)
D60 - 12-bit
Live View? - Advantage 450D
450D - Yes
D60 - No
AEB? - Advantage 450D
450D - AEB
D60 - No AEB
DOF preview button? - Advantage 450D
450D - Yes
D60 - No
Highlight Priority? - Draw
450D - Yes (Highlight Priority)
D60 - Yes (Active D-Lighting)
Auto-Focus System - Advantage 450D
450D - 9-point AF (including one enhanced centre point for use with a lens of f/2.8 or faster) (Same as 40D)
D60 - 3-point AF (same as D40x)
Viewfinder - Advantage 450D
450D - 0.87x viewfinder
D60 - 0.8x viewfinder
Dust Management - Slight Advantage 450D
Both have dust vibration reduction, and software dust removal, but the Canon comes with the software needed in order to be able to use software dust removal. The software for the Nikon will set you back about £200, which brings me on to:
Raw capabilities - Advantage 450D
Both can shoot RAW images, but only the Canon comes with the software necessary to fully take advantage of RAW shooting.
Lens Compatibility - Advantage 450D
450D - 60 1st and 113 3rd party lenses (173 total)
D60 - 34 1st and 26 3rd party lenses (60 total) (no fast Nikon primes, and only one Nikon true macro)
Shooting Speed - Advantage 450D
450D - 3.5fps
D60 - 3fps

On these very important features of a modern dSLR, the 450D clearly has the advantage.

As far as this deal goes, yeah, a good price, for now. But I’d still wait until the 450D receives some reviews, and you can actually get your hands on both to compare them.

Befor you commit to a system, you should go and hold a camera and see how it feels in your hand and if you can work with it easy. Specs are just secondary (e.g. both cameras D60 and 450D are too small for my hands).

The price difference between the D60 and 450D is closer to £200, more in a lot of places. The D60 has been compared directly to the 400D in reviews, yes you can always get something 'better' for more, but that's hardly a ground breaking argument.

D400 = XTi, D450 = XSi, different models. If they were cars I wouldn't compare an SRi to a GTi, what's the point. If I could afford the GTi. I'd buy it. if I can't then the SRi is a far as I'd look.

You don't want a £50 Tesco bike, you want a £400 gold plated titamanesium one, etc, etc... yawn

And on what basis do you make those statements? Have you tried both? Have you seen comparable reviews? Didn't think so.
As for your list of advantages, the fact is that the Nikon D40, D60 and Canon's all take great pictures, but the Nikon's are a lot cheaper than the Canon.............. and to be honest I thought the Canon's felt cheaper quality had a more plastic feel than the Nikon's
As others have said though, go to a shop and try both (or the other makes) before buying. The Canon just didn't feel right in my hand.

Forgot to say - this is a very good price for the D60, so voted hot, but I'd still save more money and get the D40 personally.

Agree with this, the D60 is just a tarted up D40 and nothing more. In no way justifies the £150 premium over the D40. If you consider yourself a money saver then there's no chance you'd buy one.

But it does make a better buy over an end of line D40x, mainly due to the new VR kit lens which could cost £180 separately.
