What are you moaning about?. It clearly states in the title "FOR STUDENTS" . And as for the "you can download and order free cds of Linux from many companies such as unbuntu" statement,

I've got a NUS Extra Card (which is meant to work also as an ISIC) but the site wouldnt accept it.

Emailed them - explained what was happening and the auto-approved me for a login by a link sent by Microsoft support - so I suggest that you do the same using your academic email - that'll end in .ac.uk ?

They probably take that as proof - Microsoft seem to be falling over to give away their products. I joined the Microsoft Acountant Network (which was free - but was work related as I working in IT and interface software to accounts packages (albeit rarely)) which got me a free Office 2007 Small Business Edition and Microsoft Accounting.

Why isn't my school or organization listed as a verification source here?
We’re working as fast as we can to get everyone on board. If your school isn’t on the list, we have several alternate student identity providers (IDPs), such as the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) you can use to verify your student status. If you’re still at a dead-end, here’s what you can do: have your IT Department check out the “University Administrator FAQs” to find out more about including your school or organization. After all, we don’t want to leave anyone out. We’re working as fast as we can to get everyone on board. After all, we don’t want to leave anyone out. If you think you’re legit and still can’t get through, click on the Contact Us link located in Student FAQ Page and complete the inquiry form so we can see if we can figure out how to help you out.

The retail student rate for recently released Visual Studio 2008 Professional (Educational) is £149.00 - Free Delivery in UK just by Googling. Enrol at your local colleage for an evening class if you are really desparate for this kind of stuff. No I am not doing such thing myself.

What are the steps for DreamSpark Student Status Verification?
There are just five easy steps and we’ll walk you through the whole thing. Here’s how it works: DreamSpark automatically directs you to the Online Student Status Verification process on your first time through the site. If you’re not signed in to your Windows Live ID account, the DreamSpark site will first direct you to the Windows Live ID sign-in page. Next you’ll visit the DreamSpark Online Student Status Verification page. The steps in the DreamSpark Online Student Status Verification process are:
Select your continent on the map.
Select your location.
Select your verification source (i.e. your school, organization or your student identity provider) from the verification source list.
Click “Select and Continue.”
Your verification source site appears as a pop-up window, prompting you to enter your student ID credentials (e.g. user name and password) provided by your school, organization or student identity provider.
Once you complete the above steps, you’ll automatically go back to the previous DreamSpark site page you last visited.

In addition, in the spirit of “one stop shopping”, you can also download from this site the following software currently available on www.microsoft.com at no charge):
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition
XNA Game Studio 2.0 (with 12-month Creators Club trial membership)
Virtual PC

Sounds good to me but then I "borrow" most of my software and hardware from work, it'd be nice if MS would hurry up and bring out a working copy of SQL Server 2008, I want to see what changes they've made to SSIS (and if they've fixed the same old bugs).

Actually, you can run .NET applications on Linux using Mono. Also, C++ isn't platform-specific, and any editor and compiler will allow you to learn the language and create applications. There are also plenty of free development environments for Windows, let alone the free MS VS Express series which is essentially a cut-down VS2008.

The comparison between Linux and VS is obviously not going to work; but between Windows Server 2003 + VS it does. It's like comparing an winning an Atom with buying a Mercedes; when you get the Atom it's free and made to your specifications, whereas the Merc is pre-built and you have to pay for the addons.
