From what I read in another thread on here, someone said he had two and they both had Samsung Spinpoints T166's inside. Which makes sense, as those are usually the cheapest 500GB HDDs around, they get good reviews though for speed despite their cheap price.

This one I believe: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/15799...-spinpoint-t1/ - also listed as a hot deal.

stapsell:
I have 2 of these. First from ebuyer for approx £55 and second from play.com £63 (plus quidco to come). Both have the samsung spinpoint 16mb cache disc inside. Small, quiet, nice black case.
Only annoying thing is no on/off switch.
Voted hot!
From this thread: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/12537...ard-drive-usb/

Manufacturer link is here: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...del_cd=HD501LJ

Some people have said it does have an on/off switch some people have said that it doesn't. Not too sure which is true unfortunately.

Well it is basically the same as an internal hard drive, so having it on all the time shouldn't really effect it as this is what most internal drives have been designed to do

Been looking at more storage for a while, so hope people don't mind me adding some techy comments to help others seduced by this deal (voted hot, BTW !)

A quick note on external drives vrs internal drives - very good if you are only moving around a few GB at a time - the transfer rate for external drives is around 1.5 GB per minute. But if you tried to fill the 500GB drive, it would take about 4.5 hours to copy over all the data.

Most people will be in the former category, so not a problem for them. But if you are shunting DVD images around (3-4 minutes per DVD) you may want to get something internal, which with the latest SATA drives is around 10 times faster. Or find an external driver that has eSATA (external SATA) as well as USB 2.0, presuming you have an eSATA port on your motherboard of course, which offers both the high speed and the benefits of external drives.

That all said, I DON'T have eSATA and would like an external drive to do overnight backups of my data, so this could well fit the bill for me

:
Best on a budget:
LaCie 500GB External Hard Drive
LaCie make extremely reliable hard drives, and their external versions are quieter than most too. This model’s roomy 500 gigabytes will put your PS3’s internal drive to shame, and it’s a snip at just 60 quid. Plus, because it’s clad in a tasteful black shell, it won’t look out of place next to your console.
You can read the entire post here: http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=917

He seems to be recommending it so it sounds as if it should work fine

Diekund:

This one is powered by a mains adapter that is included with the device.

If your looking for a USB powered enclosure they usually refer to them as "portable" and are 2.5" in size rather than the 3.5" of this LaCie.

Too see some more pictures of this device you can visit the manufacturers website: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11049
