Other sites list the patent as being issued in 1878:

The reference for the patent at the bottom on the wiki page also states 1878 although the text says 1874.

Do you have any links? It's just that Sholes got a patent for a typewriter in 1868, but it didn't have teh QWERTY key layout we all use now, that was patented in 1878.

Thanks... the answer is 1878

1868 - Patent #79265 (His first typewriter)
1878 - Patent #207559 (A revised version with a QWERTY keypad to jam fingers)

Double check for yourself at the US Patent Office

You never know - a load of places quote it differently but it looks like 1874 is when he designed the QWERTY keyboard rather than patented it. I bet they didn't do more research than a quick look on wikipedia when coming up with the question so I suspect I'll be wrong and you'll get the nice new phone
