I think I have been scammed on ebay :( Help needed on what to do.

POSTED BY: hdixon85 4 weeks, 2 days ago

On the 5th of this month I had been watching an item on ebay which had no bids on and asked if the seller would accept a buy it now offer, (through ebay, not outside of ebay) which was promptly accepted. I paid £150 for £200 of garden vouchers which is not an OMG too good to be true offer, they had good feedback, they replied quickly and politely to emails prior to payment and I paid via paypal.
Since the moment payment was sent I have received no contact, no vouchers and I was told they would be sent next day fully insured . I have sent various emails - all polite and asking what is going on, I opened a dispute with paypal and have now had to escalate it.
I always thought I was scam-proof with the precautions I took and feel really upset, it's £150!
What is the liklihood of paypal paying out, I heard something about them only paying out what the person has in their account, or something like that - which sounds rubbish. Does anyone have any experience, advice and know how likely I am to get my hard earnt money back in my account?
I would be grateful for all help.

I also requested the sellers contact information from ebay. The mobile number rings and then goes through to an orange answerphone, though I wasn't brave enough to leave a message incase it's a fake phone number, plus I have no idea what to say. I have tried the number on a few different phones, no pick up.

I opened the dispute today, after giving the seller pleanty of time, emails and opportunities as I realise that sometimes emergency family things can come up that just take priority and everything else goes out of the window, but it's the fact that the moment I paid the contact stopped and I have heard nothing at all for nearly 2 weeks. I hope paypal cover the £150, I am actually really embarassed - I just don't want to admit to friends and family I got scammed on ebay, it makes me feel somewhat foolish. And irritated that people out there are just so easily and blatently stealing. Gone are my days of trust!

I did it through ebay, the item is in my 'need to leave feedback' section.
I am a stupid person and deleted one of the emails, but have the one replying to my offer that accepts the offer in my hotmail account. I'll be making sure it's safe until this is all sorted!

The one which was 75%, why didn't you get the full refund? Anything I can do to enhance my chances of getting the full lot back? Last question - how long will this dispute take to get sorted. is it more like weeks or months?

Thank you so much. I'm feeling a bit less worried knowing you and a few others have been fully covered. Fingers crossed I get it all back.

i'm in the same boat to an extent but a little further down the line, so hopefully you can base your outcome on mine.

I bought a photobank off a guy in hongkong, a few days later i havent recieved it and i email the seller who tells me to "hold on 15days" then a couple of days later it says "this user is no longer registered"!!

set up a claim straight away and they give 10 days for the person to respond and if they dont then they give you the refund. if they do and you dont like their response then you can escalate it so a paypal person reviews in person.

well, the 16th was the tenth day so i'll let you know what happens!

i got 75% back because thats what i settled for i was stupid and purchased what should have been a 4gb mp3/mp4 player from china for £20 including postage but it was a hacked 1 gb mp3 player so i said i would accept a 75 % refund so £5 per 1gb that was missing, so £5 for a 1gb mp3/mp4 player had it about a year and its now packed up GRRRRRRRR

it all depends on how quick the seller gets back to paypal i havent done it in a while but you put in the dispute and i think they have 20 days to respond if they dont paypal find in favour of you so its hard to say how long but good luck i am sure paypal will fight in your corner,
Paypal is a buyers freind

Your transaction looks like it is covered up to £150 by Paypal anyway.
Full terms and conditions are here https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/we...ide#pbp-policy

The seller you bought off looks legitimate so you're not really to blame for much. He only has 19 feedback though and the account is nearly 4 years old so that is a bit suspicous. The only other things is the vouchers are a bit cheap especially considering they were being sent by special delivery but they weren't like being given away !

Go through the Paypal process and fingers crossed you will get your money back.

Two things to remember.
1. Do not close any Paypal dispute until you have your money back and in your hands as it were. NO MATTER WHAT !
2. Be very careful of signing for any Special Delivery package or Recorded Delivery. Try to open any packets sent this way with the Postie as a witness in case this seller is a pro scammer and sends you a blank package.

Good Luck !
