The M has 1080p and better contrast. The next model up is the new SAMSUNG LE40A557P2FXXU with twice the contrast (dynamic) which is plasma teritory but you are looking at £900+.

If you are going for spec you will struggle to beat this at the price. I have one on my wall and it's superb, especially with an upscaler or HD DVD/Blu Ray player. Sound is the only let down so I would recommend a 2:1 surround sound system or better to get the max out of it.

The N range is also 1080p. The LE40A557 is the new replacement hence very expensive in comparison to the M range but as you say it does have double the contrast ratio...
