£10 credit is already on the Virgin Sim, register the sim 2 days later £2.00 is added so that's why it says £12 credit

I found another ebayer offering to unlock it for £7.98 including return postage (1st class recorded). If I went to town it would cost me £10 I suspect.

I'd just like to make members aware that these are difficult to unlock and require a reflash which will set you back £10 in a market stall so not really worth it. Secondly don't expect Virgin to have/give you an unlock code. I bought a Nokia from Phones 4 u and after spending £30 was told by Virgin that they could not provide me with the unlock code as it had been sold by Phones4u and that they only had codes for the phones they sold themselves. They referred me to Phones 4 u who said ask Virgin for the unlock code!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I tried multiple times to get the code from virgin only to be met with the same response, so beware guys!

As a yardstick, this phone can be bought unlocked for £26.99 delivered at play.com.

So if you are happy with a Virgin locked phone - which will also work on T-Mobile sims then this thread is a good deal.

Not even as a glove box spare? I bought the Sony Ericsson J110i that was on here a while back as a spare. I think it was £14-45 including £10 call time and I got £5 Quidco - so (not counting the cost of the call time) I effectively made 55p.

Basic phones are great to keep in the car, especially with a car charger, JUST in case you leave your super-dooper, all-singing, all dancing, bells and whistles phone at home by mistake. No need to worry about them being stolen and they could save your life in an emergency.

According to Consumer Law, if you bought the phone from Phones4U, THEY are the ones responsible for the contract and NOT Virgin. If you want to chase anyone for unlocking it should be Phones4U. If it were me I would speak to Phones4U, ask them to contact Virgin and demand to see a manager if they don't play ball. Front point of sale is always responsible for the contract so don't let them pass the buck!

READ THIS from Martin Lewis' Moneysavingexpert.com: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...7#post10212847

To save you reading through the whole thing, here's what Virgin's own T&C say:

Obtaining an NUC code

Vodafone will supply a Network Unlock Code (NUC) for you if you have an account with us either Contract or Pay As You Talk (PAYT.) An NUC allows you to use non-Vodafone SIM cards inside your Vodafone handset.

If you got the phone with a contract the NUC will be free of charge, regardless of its age, as all new contract phones are now dispatched unlocked.
If the phone is a PAYT handset over 12 months old the code will also be free of charge.
If it's a PAYT handset that's less than 12 months old a charge of £19.99 including VAT would apply. The £19.99 will need to be credited to your phone before you apply for the code. Once the NUC has been issued the charge will be debited.

To obtain an NUC code you would need to contact our customer services team on 08700 700 191 or 191 from a Vodafone mobile. You could also contact us by completing our online contact form, available on www.vodafone.co.uk at the Vodafone Contact Us Forum.

You will need to have the following information available for us to process your code

* Make/model of mobile
* IMEI number (The IMEI can be found by entering *#06# into your phone or it is also given in the battery compartment of the device).

If the IMEI number is kept on our system we can give you the NUC straight away. If we don't hold the details there is a timescale of 72 hours to retrieve the code from the mobile phone manufacturer. The only exception for this is for Samsung, who have a timescale of up 16 days.

Obtaining a GID1 code

Prior to October 2004 all Vodafone PAYT handsets were GID1 locked in addition to being network locked. A GID1 code means that the handset would only accept a PAYT SIM card (unless the GID1 lock was removed.)

From October 2004 onwards Vodafone PAYT handsets no longer came with a GID1 lock. In instances where an older phone may still be GID1 locked Vodafone will remove this free of charge. Please follow the above instructions to obtain a GID1 code if required.

Also, and this is my FINAL quote, I read this: "i called vodafone 2 days ago and was told that they would charge me £19.99 because i bought my phone last november, i was reallyangry at this cos i have 4 phones registered with them and have spent approx £80 per month for past 3 years, so i told them that i had bought another phone (the same model) for someone else in nov and they believed me and gave me the code

so just tell them your phone is over a year old, they have no way of tracing where you got the phone."

I hope this helps.
