Break down cover

POSTED BY: stuartw 1 week, 4 days ago

Hi
I need to get some break down cover today (need to travel to london tomorrow and car is looking shaky)

Looking for a good deal on one that gets you to your destination, also prefer one that tries to fix your car by the road, (as I wasted hours on a simple fault when I went to Elephants super cheap cover, with no road side assistance)

I have been both a member of AA and RAC, so unfortunately can't take any 1st time offers.

Cheers

It's alway worth trying your insurance company to see if they have a deal, this year I got my breakdown cover free with M and S Insurance. I normally use GEM who are very good and one of the cheapest, you can also get it even cheaper by agreeing to pay for any breakdown and then re-claim it from them. I did this a couple of times and they'd re-inbursed me before I got my credit card bill. Good luck

Alternatively look at what your bank etc offer!

Barclays, allow you to upgrade to their additions plus pack at around £13 p/m which gives you travel and roadside insurance. Better still, its on 3 months approval, so although you have to pay for it, if after 3 months you say you don't want it, they give you your money back, (so I'm told, doesn't apply if you claim on the policy).

Hope this is of some help!

I have always been wary of these expensive current accounts ever since NatWest started charging for their gold account. Up until then, I had a gold account that gave all these extra benefits for free. I refused to pay for something that I was getting for free and have never taken any of these offers up.

Today I read in the Times Money supplement that their opinion is that these are almost always a waste of money as the benefits are almost always available cheaper elsewhere. The banks seem to be raising charges for these premium accounts as they are not going to be able to charge as much for overdrafts and penalty charges soon.

There is also an article in the Times Online here which talks about RBS, NatWest and Lloyds TSB raising charges before the OFT report into unfair charges is published.
