Charges being applied to plastic bags at supermarkets

POSTED BY: TGB 6 months, 2 weeks ago

Listening to the radio this morning, there's a lot of talk about the 5p (or there abouts) price on plastic bags in the supermarket, specifically M&S who have just started this. Now I've been complaining about the price of just about everything lately and a price being attached to something that used to be free should probably get my blood boiling... but I really don't seem to mind.

I generally always bring along a couple of re-useable bags when I go shopping, folded up (the ones that have a button) and in my bag.

I often shop at Lidl where they've always charged 3p for bags, which gives me more of an incentive to bring some re-useable ones with me. Hell, I've even resorted to picking up an empty box and using that to carry my goods back to the car!

I understand it's going to be inconvenient for some, but I can't see it really affecting me much. If I'm gonna be charged for bags then I'm more likely to try and remember to bring my own next time I go shopping at Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys.

What's your take on this?

I thought the M&S 5p bag would be the bag for life style, as they have recently been giving this away in some promotion.
However, M&S have done alot towards bag for life style bags, they sell various types of canvas' bags, one of which I personally think is going to be the 'under £5 IT bag for the summer'

Shops charging you for bags is a good incentive for you to re-use bags, I would! I do, I use an over sized handbag so i don't have to use carrier bags as much, and always re-using larger carrier bags!- Even if it is as dustbin bags

I believe there's an island somewhere in the british isles that charge for carrier bags? (Maybe it's a county!) .... right i'll quit my little rant

actually.... i'd like to carry on!

I got p'vd in asda the other day as... they had their bag for life bags on those little hooks where their normal bags are kept...
which really preasured me in to purchasing one as I had picked it up thinking that was the bag i had to use... then the cashier told me i had to pay for it!

I have re-used it since, only the once as it then got a large rip in it!!! luckily I had my 'man bag' (Note: I'm female!!) with me so I had the hassle of rearranging stuff to ease the asda bag! Which then made me late for my lesson :( (Rarely happens!)

I also had with me an m&s bag for life bag (Yeah, lots of bits with me!) which didn't break!!! hmm :(

I think this is a good thing.
If you ever go to France you will find that most supermarkets there have this policy, and everyone copes. You either get organised and bring your own bags with you, or you pay. The theory is that it saves the environment because the bags don't end up in landfill.
What I'd like to see is the money you pay for your bag being put towards a charitable cause to do with the environment.
What I haven't seen is a solution to what happens with home delivery. We still get 20 odd bags for home delivery because you often get one item in a bag. I can't see them charging for these bags either. Maybe a few large boxes which you have to return for a refundable deposit?

very goog thing... they should be taxed like alcohol and cigs.

the general public needs to be forced into doing this as not many people are unselfish enough to change on thier own.

electricity use should be monitored as well as water and gas. my GF family waste so much of each so if the price went up on a means tested basis (so elderly people were not affected) then people would change!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that doesn't understand what all the fuss is about. My sister's a vet and was telling me the other day that plastic bags kill ducks as they wrap around them and cause them to suffocate/drown. I guess this is more carelessness of the people who use them and just chuck them away though.

So screw 'em! I have loads of re-useables from Tesco, Sainsburys and Wilko and part of my kitchen cupboard filled to the rim with plastic bags I've used over the years. I don't think I'll need another one.

I'd like 5p/litre off at the pump for every plastic bag I don't take.

sainsburys used to do a penny for each bag you reuse... but they stopped once it got too popular (dont know real reason)!!

and people can trade i tink its like 10 normal bags for a thicker reusable one at asda.

there is so much out there to support people reusing bags but people are lazy. i hope it costs £1 a bag... I honestly do.

at tesco's I think you get green points towards your advantage card points for re-using!
My nan goes over the top with hers... she has about 8 of the big bags... (But she has used them ever since they came out!)

might be a good idea to only buy what you can carry without using a bag, good way of dieting too ! could even learn to balance things on your head like they do in Africa now that would be a sight

Instead of charging 5p for a bag which is not environmentally friendly, why don't these supermarkets find a more environmentally friendly bag, then charge us 5p for them!
Stupid supermarkets .. which should also cut down on the amount of packaging they use!
