New drivers get stung, just going to have to take the plunge and build up your no claims to lower the cost of insurance.

Theres a great guide over on MSE about getting the cheapest quote, and if you follow it by the letter you should find the best one. I don't have the direct link but you should find it ok, or else somebody might know the link?

£400-£500?! If you get a car that's not due to fall apart any minute the quote might actually be cheaper. Also make sure you don't get anything above 1.3l or you'll pay dearly for that insurance-wise too.

Go to confused.com, cheesy but it does the business. Put in your phone number and if you're anything like me you'll have people phoning you up trying to beat each other's quotes! If not then find the cheapest, check to see if you can go through quidco and get it that way.

basically you pay for your insurance which includes a fee for those who do not have it!

Big Scam

Thanks guys

Im looking for a specific car IE a 1litre. (1000CC)

Ive been told that can lower the quote by a significant amount

If you have an accident and write of someone else's brand new jag, i don't think you'll be calling scam!

When I first passed my test a few years ago, my first premium was about £500 although that was for 3rd party only. With a car only worth a few hundred it's not really worth going for fully comp as it'll probably be twice the price!

Consider the car you are buying carefully, as there are different classes which make a big difference. For example, try your quote using a Fiat Cinquecento - you will find it very cheap. I don't know which others are in a similar class, but there must be a list somewhere.

Good point.. BUT what i meant by scam was the price. Not the insurance itself

I have a nissan micra which are extremely economical and cheap to insure. Not cool, perhaps, but gets me from A to B. I expect typical 'Boy Racer' cars like Novas and Pegeot 106s are going to be more expensive because of the demographics of the average driver.

You can find out the insurance category in the Parkers guide i believe... You should definitely buy that, it's very useful as it tells you exactly what cars are worth.

select a group 1 or 2 car and then get a quote again

http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/

select third party only if you live in a low crime area. This halved mine from £180 to £90 and then I got £65 quidco so only £35 for the year (group 8 car).

Here you go - check here for insurance classes. The lower the number, the cheaper it should be to insure
