Good spot IF you want a BUSINESS purchase - ie are happy to do without the benefits of the distance selling regulations - which would give you 7 working days to 'reject' the notebook 'as new' if it didnt meet your needs (though you would potentially still have to pay ££ to return it to Dell).

Not that VISTA BUSINESS is not the same as HOME versions

Follow the OP's tip to increase the HD to 160GB. It may be peverse but doing so reduced the final price to that which OP quoted so despite the 10% reduced £18 increase for that bigger HD there must be another Dell saving associated with having that option in the configuration.

XP Pro would better than Vista on this laptop. Very good spot. Voted hot.

If you choose Vista Business you are entitled to replace it with XP Pro as per Microsoft’s licensing terms and can move back to Vista in the future if you like. You have to get the free XP Pro disc direct from Dell and install it yourself though; this is speaking from experience.

1gb is not enough memory to run Vista really so best to stick with XP and this is good value

It's not ideal.

I'd prefer to pay £399 (or less depending on vouchers) for this:

It'san excellent notebook. I bought my Vostro 1500 about 6 months ago and still happy with it. However, I highly recommend swapping the akku and grafic card as the provided options for this offer are very basic. Go for the 9-cell Lithium-Ion Battery and a Nvidia grafic card instead. The 9-cell battery sticks out a bit but will reward you with 4-5 hours running time. Oh, and 1 Gig memory is a bit on the short end. 2 Gb are must have, especially on Vista. So overall, this configuration is very basic, but you get what you pay for..
