got the 5980 model, well worth it if you got a HD TV. - Got mine hooked up to 400gb harddrive and it plays everything i throw at it

am i right in thinking you simply connected an external hard drive through usb and it plays the files back "upscaled"?

Y'know, I lost the remote for my old regionless player and I was thinking I'd have to get a universal remote and hope. This is probably a better solution for me as I won't have to hope and I'll have upscaling for the future. Thanks!

Has anyone got an opinion on upscaling? I haven't got any kind of upscalinging equipment but I cannot imagtine how anything is 'upscaled'. I know HDMI will help with picture quality but how does actual upscaling translate to real life? Does it make a difference?

The only thing i can imagine is that original DVD's have a higher resolution than a SDTV can display and so the upscaler takes advantage of it - this is how DVD compression software is so quick to 'transcode', it strips off the unnecessary. If this isn't the case it must be boule-lox.

Or am I missing something fundemental here? Would you be able to tell(with the same setup) that something was upscaled or was not? You could tell HD from SD no problem...................

This is a superb player, I have one for a year now and plays just about any divx file you can throw at it, picture quality on a HDTV with HDMI cable is fantastic.
It is also a favourute of firmware modders, I have loaded a modified firmware on and it gives longer filenames when using USB sticks and better divx playback compatibility than the stock firmware.
Buy this now, a steal at this price! HOT HOT HOT!
