Turkey Holiday

POSTED BY: yummymummy2202 5 days, 13 hours ago

I'm going to Turkey at the end of June for an all inclusive holiday at the First Choice Holiday Village. I have heard a few stories about the currency and i'm a bit confused as to what I should take.....English pounds or Turkish Lira or Euro. Any one been that can give me advice?

Lots of germans go to turkey so they take euros, euros and turkish lira will be the main currency you will see advertised in shops. I took both last time.

I would also see what the interest rate is

I actually took only Lira and £10 and £20 sterling notes and it was fine. For trips and things they usually quote in round sterling figures but will work it in Lira for you but really most restaurants display prices in LIra and Sterling. Euros aren't actually the real currency over there so I wouldn't bother paying to get money in Euros when Sterling is perfectly fine. It is good to know the exchange rate though between Lira and Sterling because they round things to whole numbers a lot of the time you may want to check which one gives you the better deal but there isn't much in it. And of course you will need sterling to get into the country anyway. I think it's £10 or £20 each that you have to hand over.

Yes I have been told I need to pay £10 English Sterling on arrival at the airport to get into the country.
Lots of people have different views on the currency but most say dont waste your time getting Lira as £ do in most places, just take a little Lira for taxis etc

Yep, thats about right. I think I only took £50 of Lira for the whole trip and the rest in Sterling. As the little taxis like just Lira passed quickly to them as they don't have time to give change out and the taxi busses are too crowded to worry about change. Trip Advisor was invaluable when I was going to Turkey, it's worth the look. What area are you going to? I was in Marmaris

I went a few years ago (to Altinkum) before the Euro & even then they took sterling & you got more for your money that way too ! Just to say you have to haggle for everything in Turkey & prices are really cheap anyway ... hope you have a great time, It was one of my favourites the people are lovely ... if you're going through the summer months it's really HOT & I mean 'HOT'

what i did when i went to turkey on my own was have all my money in a nationwide account and withdraw it at a cashpoint on the day when i needed it. gives you the best exchange rate at the time and no charges from nationwide. best currency out there is lira.
and its a £10 note to get into the country. that pays for the visa. just make sure you have a £10 NOTE per person and you'll be fine

further note, make sure you goto olu deniz. beautiful beach and brilliant cheap boat tours.
