IMPORTANT: Hotlinking to images (posting images from another site)

POSTED BY: duckmagicuk2 2 months, 1 week ago

There's been another case here today where someone has "hotlinked" an image from another site. The image was then replaced by a naughty and extremely obscene picture by the site owners which was then displaying on HotUKDeals.

Hotlinking is basically where you take the URL (web address) of an image that is hosted on another site, such as "http://www.hotukdeals.com/images/alerts_rss.gif" and post it here in a comment/reply. Whilst it takes a very unscroupulous site to do something as harsh as change their links to dirty pictures, it's still considered bad manners to link directly to an image on someone else's site as this uses up their paid-for bandwidth.

So we are, once again, urging all users to use extreme caution when posting images from other sites.

To avoid problems and be polite to other hosts, please upload the image to a site such as the ones in this list:
www.imageshack.us
www.tinypic.com
www.photobucket.com (free account needed)

This does not affect the images in deal posts as they are automatically re-sized and uploaded to the HUKD server. Obviously, if it's a deal for a TV at Argos and you want to post a reply with a picture of a different TV at Argos or something along those lines then it's not really a worry.

Please post here if you need any help uploading any pictures to an imagehost, or if you have any questions.

Can I suggest putting URLs of sites who's owners are replacing images in this manner into the swear filter, to stop such images being displayed (at least in replies)

The swear filter wouldn't cover anything in image tags as far as I know.

Yeah it does. I tried posting a pic the other day that had a naughty word in it (I didn't realise), and that bit of the URL was replaced with asterisks.

Like this for example: www.thewordwas*****.co.uk

Why not use the same method as you do for ebay links? I doubt too many sites would go to the effort you have suggested - and lets be fair, they dont sound like a company that would be missed.

So what was this dodgy companies name?

You are assuming the company has a distinguished name and not "www.greatukdeals.co.uk" Now that would make good reading in the forum if you banned "great uk and deals" Of course the complete URL inc co.uk would work!

I'm not assuming anything. I was just pointing out that the swear filter does pick up words within the image tags.

As for the suggestion of using the swear filter for this problem, I don't see the point. Stable doors and bolting horses spring to mind.

Great, if the company has a swear word in the title!

Just pointing out that the company name needs to be something that can be filtered without censuring everyday words!

Far easier just to now allow the company to have posts here if thats what they are like!

If the website is www.wewantmoredeals.co.uk

then you can just merge two words together, without blcking an everyday word

www.wewaNTMORedeals.co.uk

that would still block the site, but not any words

Could not the word "greatukdeals" be added, as single phrase. (no need for the TLD)

I don't agree, I've done it before for people who have used my images and my bandwidth for their photos on ebay. I've also done it to someone who cloned my entire site.

Why should I (or anyone else) pay for someone on here to look at pictures hosted on my site, just because the poster is too lazy to upload them themselves to imageshack or wherever.

I include this as something against the rules on my forum

:
Including images within your post that are not hosted on your own webspace or a free image host, without the explicit permission of the webspace owner
Was it a company who changed the pic and was it posted in a deal thread or was it just a photo nicked from another site? If it was a pic advertising a deal then I would agree it was a bit off, if the company are making money from it then to change it to something else is just petty and stupid
