I thought I read 250GB was the maximum it would allow. So I just went for the Western Digital from eBuyer £52 and that has the same rpm as the existing 40GB hard inside your PS3 currently. Works a treat.

Needs to be a 2.5" laptop SATA drive, rpm is not really an issue as far as preference goes i would go with samsung or western digital its what i use across all my equipment. Unless you are planning on having alot of movies and music on it you wont need more than 250gb also if you plan on watching ripped HD material you can always just burn it to dvdr and run it from the xmb its what i do with all my HDDVD's.

There are two main sizes of hard drive.

There are the "large" 3.5" drives that go into a full sized desktop PC.

Plus there are also "small" 2.5" drives that go into a laptop.

The PS3 ONLY takes 2.5" laptop drives.

Here is a picture of a 2.5" laptop drive to show you their size

Note their are two types of connections: IDE and SATA. the PS3 takes a SATA connection.

so im assuming the link that i showed works for a ps3? will 1TB cause too much heat and noise? i think 250 GB might be too little for me.... looking for maybe at least 500GB? will that cause the ps3 to overheat or maybe cause loads of noise?

If you read the link that you posted what does it say:

>Form Factor 3.5" x 1/3H

SO IT IS A 3.5" DISK SO WILL **NOT** FIT IN A PS3.

Also, some people have already said that 250Gb is probably the maximum in a PS3.

Please read some replies before flying back with more quesitons.

Some people make things such hard work.

Youre best option is a 320gb or 500gb internal 2.5" SATA drive @ 5200rpm.

Put a 7200rpm HDD in your PS3, and you'll have faster loading times, but it might overheat

3.5" drives will NOT fit inside a PS3

lol... my bad thought i saw 2.5.... and about the size, 250Gb is not definite... as you can see again someone posted that there is 500Gb... so it doesnt harm to ask.... you wont drop dead if you are just willing to ask, in fact i get a more accurate answer than previous posts....

You can connect a 3.5" hard drive. replacing the 2.5" drive with a caddy with connections for an external 3.5"
