How much do you pay for your eggs?

POSTED BY: TGB 4 months, 4 weeks ago

Thought I'd ask. I'm now getting mine from a place that keeps free roaming chickens and paying £1.60 for 12 large eggs. Before this it was £1.15ish for 6 medium freerange at Lidl, or more at the supermarkets so I'm happy!

I've probably paid about .... <quick calculation> ... £32,000 for the two eggs I've fertilised. Quite expensive eggs really.

£1.50 for six at the supermarket - they're local Hampshire produce apparently. I have a butchers round the corner that often does free range duck eggs 6 for £1.20 and they are awesome

i never have to buy eggs as we have 50 hens and 3 ducks. I give the eggs away to friends and family.
The price of the feeding doubled last year and that is why the eggs are dearer to buy.

Been hearing lots about keeping your own hens (or poor ex-battery hens) lately. Very interesting, and might be something I'll have to try in the future.

Yes I've noticed egg prices in the supermarkets creeping up a lot lately. I'm now v. happy to be getting them direct from the farm and knowing the £1.60 goes right back into the organisation (it's a charity, so all for a good cause)

Lucky them - I hope they return the favour by buying you feed sometimes. What do you feed them? Corn pellets?

They get fed corn and layers pellets. We buy a ton of corn from a local farm once a year.
Chickens do not lay eggs all the year round, they stop laying for about 3 months in the winter, it's only deep litter chickens that lay all year as they have constant lighting in the winter.

Yeah, I'm pretty tight; buy all their toys on here - lol - on the 2nd point: ahh, but think of how poor you would have been with all that cash and nobody to love
