Help! Trying to decide on a holiday...

POSTED BY: CReilly 1 month, 3 weeks ago

Greets, HUKDer's!

I am looking to take my girlfriend on a (realtivley) cheap holiday in the summer, for her birthday. I am thinking South or West Europe, but anywhere out of the UK is fine really - neither have us have been abroad before, so it's bound to be a bit of an adventure!

We are both university students, which means the following:
* We can go on holiday anytime between late June and mid-September
* I don't have loads of cash, I am looking to spend about £200 per person (not including money we spend there: so thats just travel and hotel costs really).

Requirements:
Location:
* Different! We have been all over the UK, so we want a change!
* A nice beach would be nice, but not essential.
* Geared to tourists: we want there to be lots to do, but don't want it to be really tacky - we live in Blackpool, so we have had our fill of that! We want a mix between youth oritentated activities and culture. We dont want to spend the whole week drinking, but we dont want to spend it all in museums either, so a balance would be preferable.

Travel:
* As long as its not too complicated, I dont mind. Stuff like the free first-class upgrade on the Eurostar train that I saw on here before sounds ideal. I would assume that planes are too expensive (although I have never travelled on one before, so am not too sure of this).

Hotel:
* Really dont want somewhere dossy. Girlfriends even worse, she is a bit of a snob! Obviously we are not expecting champagne and five course dinners laid on, and we will spend nearly all our time out. What I am looking for is a happy medium - a nice, clean, friendly place to come home at night, and get a good nights sleep will do fine.

Sorry for all the reading. I await any suggestions!

Chris.

Crete? specifically Gouves

I went there with an ex in August last year and it was really nice,

There are plenty of bars, and restaurants but they are not in your face
Smack on the beach.
There a water park not far an a coach there and ticket was about £20 and its a whole day activity, really fun.
There are sealife centres nearby,
A large city, Heraklion is 15 minutes by cab away, good for a night out
Nice food
30 minutes from the airport by taxi (heraklion international)
Can hire quad bikes for the day

Was perfect for us for a relaxing trip (both 23 yr old)

highly recommended

I use these to book most holidays.

As you have a wide window.. you could keep looking for last minute deals..
You could get an All Inclusive for less than £300...Flights, transfers, meals, drinks etc.. So no need to spend much when you're there.

But if you want to see the country your staying in, then a B&B would be more cost effective.

As it's your first time, I would suggest that you go for a striaght-forward deal e.g.
http://holidays.easyjet.com/Default.aspx
Have a trawl.
For instance:

Hi,

I have used hotels.com before, they have a good search engine that is fairly specific, plus you get 10% on quidco.

Thanks All!

Dfaz: sounds interesting, how much did it cost you per person for hotels and travel?

Rockyfella: I considered it, but we both work in the summer and have to book our holidays well in advance! If we booked a week off, and just "last-minuted" it, how far in advance do you get to choose your break?

I noticed that teletext holidays online had 2 week holidays to a four star hotel in Lanzarote mid June for £313 each inc. everything.

Usually last minutes are up to a month away.. so not too bad.

now your asking lol i think it worked out about £150 for the flight and 1 weeks accomodation in a villa type room, had double bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living area and patio.

I used travel supermarket for all my flights and http://www.sunshine.co.uk/ to book the hotel.

The place we stayed in Gouves was Kaissa beach apartments, but there are lots of other apartments around.
