Looking for a brand new computer for under £100 ?

Then build it yourself. Personal Computer World magazine July 2008 on sale from May 15th. has the details. The spec. is as follows
Intel D201GLY2 motherboard with Celeron 220 1.2Ghz CPU soldered in place, onboard audio and video.
512 Mb memory
80 Gb. Sata hard disk
CDrom
Case & PSU
Ubuntu operating system

Not included, monitor, keyboard, mouse.
Of course, since you are buying the components and building it yourself, the specification is very flexible. The above spec can be put together for under £100, however the article suggests an upgraded option with a smarter case, 1Gb memory and dvd writer bringing the cost up to £127.
Performance figures for the £99 version were better than those for an Asus eeePC.

It's a while since I looked at the cost of building a pc and it came as a surprise to me that you can put together a system for so little money.

Plus if they tested the original EEE did they bother to overclock it to 900 MHz?
You are right, there is no comparison. The article stated that to give an idea of the performance only.

And that'll be £91.78 for a slightly more powerful system. It actually won't be too bad - that CPU is easily powerful enough to run HD video, and it'll be fairly decent with most games, if it gets coupled with a decent video card. A fine spec for a media centre, or a total tightwad.

Acording to the author, this has "comparable performance to a 3Ghz Celeron processor, which you'd have found in a £500 desktop PC from two years ago. It was a nice surprise in performance terms".
I doubt that you'd get a two year old, £500 computer for £30-£40

Is this a dual core?
I doubt very much that cpu performance has trippled in the last 2 yrs, they are a good bit quicker than then but not %200 quicker, so apart from the speed of opening explorer windows i doubt that alot tbh and also think its a ridiculous comparing it to a micro like the eepc

LOL - How did the author get a Celeron 1.2Ghz CPU to be comparable to a 3Ghz Celeron processor? He should sell the secret to Intel

TBH, just look on ebay and a PC with this spec will go for about £40!

I just had a quick look and this sold for £38.50

AMD 64bit Sempron 2800+ PC with 512mb RAM, 30Gb IDE hard drive, CD/RW drive, with Windows XP Home Edition

It's outperformed by a new £90 computer and it's got two years of wear on it, so it seems very likely that it's going to go for £30-40.

Because celeron is/was just intel's budget label, it says nothing about the ar chitecture of the chip and it's performance per clock. A 1.2Ghz processor can easily be faster than a 3Ghz one
