Bank stupid overdraft fines!

POSTED BY: SkippyDoo 1 month, 2 weeks ago

Hi there.

Recieved a letter from a bank account I hold with Abbey National. This account has ben dormant for some while now didn't really find any use of it! (Don't ask why I still have it lol)

Well I recently wanted to transfer a few hundred from my PayPal which I did, so the money was transfered and that was the end of that. However apparently before that money was transferred a payment of £12 there only being £5 in the account initially was taken, so then it was -£7!

As there is on overdraft permission on that card I have been fined £40!

I don't agree to paying that and think its pathetic of them to do so! Is there any way around this?

Hope to hear from you people soon!

Thanks

Give them a call - Halifax have reversed fees for me before - it's worth a couple of minutes...

I arranged a scheduled transfer from my account in Bank A to my other account in bank B. I went out of UK and forget to put enough money into the account. Bank A charge me £38.

straight away, I wrote to them saying i was outside UK cannot access the internet blablabla and ask for the money back. Luckily they say: "the charge was correct, but as a kind gesture, we will refund it" so i got my precious £38 back.

you can try that if you wish

Abbey are terrible for things like this, my missus has an account with them and they charge her for going a few pence overdrawn, then charge her again when they can't take the charge out due to insufficient funds lol.

TBH, you should have updated paypal to your new account so Abbey's charges, whilst being high are strictly speaking fair under their T&C's.

Mind you, every time I have ever incurred charges, I just ring and explain the situation and they ALWAYS refund the charge. I had to say close my account a few times and they back down.

Then again, you might not be so lucky with a dormant account.

How anyone has an Abbey account these days is beyond me. they are always bottom of the CS tables since Banco Santander implemented their new computer system.

if all else fails the hearing to reclaim your bank charges are due around 22nd of may theres a good chance the hold the banks have applied for will be removed paving the way for claims to be put in to refund all bank charges

I had my savings account and my current account linked to my paypal - savings account only linked to put money in from sales. At xmas i ordered my daughter a ps2 game from ebay and for some reason paypal tried to take it from my savings account and not my current account. I tried to get the paypal recipient to cancel the payment as i had no money in my savings account but they didnt reply to me and the bank charged me £38 for bouncing the payment and another £38 as i dont have a switch card or direct debit facility on my savings account. I phoned the bank and explained and they said they would look into it and get back to me. When they phoned me back they said that it was my own fault so the charges were kept and a £20 game cost me £76 in fees! Really not what you need just before xmas with 3 kids to buy for

I racked up several hundred pounds of bank charges when I was at Uni, would love to see that money again.

Abbey is the worst bank for charges...had mine reversed twice with them due to their incompetence now they say i cant reverse any more as i have exceeded my goodwill gestures...what a joke they tried to charge me £55 last time for going £2 overdrawn as my child trust fund came out (that is an abbey account by the way) daylight robbery and they dont even send you a letter anymore to tell you you are overdrawn. My question is if you have no overdraft why do they let you go overdrawn????
